What motor oil do you use?
Hey all, I am trying to make a final choice on which oil to run in my 06 5.3 2wd Silverado.
I know that everyone will have their favorite and/or opinions, but I just wanted to compile a list and see which brands stick out. Do you run Conventional or Synthetic? What brand? Thanks

Re: What motor oil do you use?
i have always been a fan of the mobile one fully synthetic its a little more expensive but it pours almost clear even after almost 7000 miles in a newer engine

Re: What motor oil do you use?
I use mobil one 5w30 synthetic in my 5.3. I am extremely paranoid so I don't let it get much over 3000 before I change it but it always comes out lookin good. I always use a napa gold(wix) filter too. I have thought about switchin to royal purple but $2 more a quart is alot when mobil is already almost $6

Re: What motor oil do you use?
mobil 1 is great, Castrol is also good. Pennzoil is definetaly the WORST crap ever put in a bottle!!!!! Synthetic is great but not for high miler motors, and you cant break a motor in on it either

Re: What motor oil do you use?
Not exactly sure but I think it says in the manual to not use synthetic for the first 5k or so.
I heard or read that somewhere?

Re: What motor oil do you use?
I run Amsoil in everything I own (my 02 GMC, mama's Monte Carlo, both motorcycles, tractor, and both snowmobiles).
In the 02 GMC 6.0L, I run Amsoil synthetic 5W-30 (ASL) with the Amsoil filter. Change filters at 5000 miles, change oil at 10,000 miles.

Re: What motor oil do you use?
I use GM , because it is the oil sold and installed by the Mr. Goodwrench guys that change my oil, filter and do the lube.....Three Trucks and two cars ago I started doing this and so far...knock on wood.....480,000 miles without having any of the engines repaired.

Are you sure you are getting Goodwrench oil? I have worked at two large dealers, and the bulk oil is not Goodwrench oil at either one. It is decent oil, but not actual Goodwrench oil, although we do carry that in bottles.

Re: What motor oil do you use?
OKay here's the deal all oil out there has to meet strict Goverment and Mfg. Spec's. & Reg's. and pass many test just to be bottled and sold to the public Soooooo.
With that said i know theres gonna be a few guys say yeah but! this that and the other thing. If you change your oil regularly and for me that's every 5k not 3k you will never have any kind of an eng. failure. I buy the conventional Wally world oil it's called Super Tech i use the 5w30 in the '99 Hoe and the 10w30 in the '87 Stepper. It's Quaker State in a wally world bottle @ 1/2 the price. Say what you want but for something that your gonna throw away anyway's why pay out all that money it's false insurance. As for Synthetic that's another line of BS the conventional oil's of today are so refined and well engineered to provide the best protcetion ever you don't need to run this stuff unless you have a car that the Mgf. requires it or if you just like to waste your money. Now if this is a rece engine then you need to use the proper oil for that application. |

Re: What motor oil do you use?
MOBILE 1 USER HERE........
But, check your oil level at least once a month when you pay your car insurance or something. It is normal for a chevy engine to use a full quart every 3000 miles!!!!!! That was printed out for me by my Grease Monkey guy when I asked if I could be burning oil (56K miles). Good thing my Impala has a low oil level light! I should know better to check more often, but now I will for sure. As for conventional oils being as good as synthetics......I've seen too many State Fair Demonstrations comparing the two to believe that all that research and science was for nothing! A.......

oil not be used during the "break-in" period of an engine. The reason for this is that synthetics, possessing extraordinary lubricity and lubricant film strength, do not permit the metal wear necessary for the seating of piston rings. A change to synthetic motor oil should wait until you new or rebuilt engine has completed the break-in period of six to eight thousand miles." According to Mobil, this is no longer an issue with the engines of today, but who knows... For the record, I use Mobil 1 in both trucks. After breaking them in on convetional.

Is the oil system cleaner an additive or machine?

Re: What motor oil do you use?
Correction Wildebill308......... BMW's use 5W30 full synthetic CASTROL OIL OIL exclusivly in all their models with the exception of the M3 M6 & Alpina7 which all use CASTROL 10W60 OIL . I've worked the parts counter @ BMW for 8 yrs.

Re: What motor oil do you use?
Mobil 1, in my trucks, car & Motorcycle, never had motor failure 25 years and 1 million plus miles (pure luck). In addition to LUCK any good oil regulary changed is good insurance, But, i think we all know bad things can and still do happen no matter how well we take care of our cars, trucks etc... my 2 cents worth
