Dirveshaft Help ????

I have a 64 long/fleet. My question is do I have to use a two piece dirveshaft or can I use a 1 piece? Truck is going to have a 4/6 drop. The original driveshaft broke while driving it home and was lost. THANKS!!!

Re: Dirveshaft Help ????

I think you'll be fine using a one piece, especially since your truck is lowered.

Re: Dirveshaft Help ????

I recommend a 2 piece drive shaft with center bearing support on a long bed, like the factory installed. I was told you don't want to have a drive shaft over 72" or it will start to vibrate or go into oscillations a high speed and self destruct.

Re: Dirveshaft Help ????

Has anyone had a custom length driveshaft made? Who did you go through and how much does it run? I'm swapping out the 350 trans for a 700r4 and bagging my truck. Don't have the slightest idea where to start with the driveshaft. I was going to go to the local tranny shop and just let them do it but I'm all about saving money if I can order it on my own from someone else.

Thanks,
Daniel

Re: Dirveshaft Help ????

I believe all the short beds came with the one piece drive shaft. I had a 66' long bed a few years back and it had the two piece. I think I would stick with the two piece on a long bed. A one piece drive shaft that long could cause a lot of damage if it runs out very much at all.

Re: Dirveshaft Help ????

I've purchased a assembly manual for the 60-66 trucks and strange thing is some were 2 piece drive shafts and some were single drive shafts so I think you'll be fine with just the single piece.

I used a one piece. I measured the distance than had a new tube installed and had it balanced.

Re: Dirveshaft Help ????

Hi all, it's been a while since I logged on or posted. This subject of driveshafts puzzles me as my lwb 63 came from the factory with a one piece driveshaft. I had to have it shortened slightly when I swapped out the 3 on the tree for a TH 350 about 18 years ago. No problems with 130k miles behind a healthy 327.

Re: Dirveshaft Help ????

Tom,

Did you go to the one piece driveshaft for your long bed? If so, what length did you go with? I have wanted to go to the one piece, but was not sure if it would work. I am running a 327 with a turbo 350. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
