Crazy idea

Would it be possible to bolt a Road Ranger 10 speed or Fuller transmission to a 350 or 454 gas motor? If so how was it done? What adapters would be needed?

Thanks

Re: Crazy idea

I guess anything is possible, but why would you want to? A diesel has a very limited RPM range, with most of the medium to large ones only hittin 2500 RPM... requiring many gears to make the engine of any value on the street.
A gas engine can rev twice that without stressing it too much, so it doesn't need the gears.

Re: Crazy idea

kind of a crazy concepts at first i was thinking you would need a lot of torque to turn it but its a c10 not a peterbuilt. but they are huge trannys. and i dont know what the benifts would be they are not 10 consecutive gears . high low you would go fatser you would glow slower then a 90 year old many taking a dump in first but i may be all wrong give it a try but i wouldnt waste my time i think what you want is an overdrive unit that would be smart.

Re: Crazy idea

Most of those roadrangers have a 2" input shaft. Some of the older trannys have a 1 1/2" shaft so you would need a custom built clutch and then the bell housing is waaay too big.

Re: Crazy idea

What....you tryin to upstage the guys in the 6spd club? I agree, those parts are very big/heavy, & not really useable in a gas powered pickup. L

Re: Crazy idea

not to mention the chassis modifactions you would need to hold all that weight. it probably weighs more than the whole truck.

Re: Crazy idea

You would have to have an engine driven air compressor and tanks to be able to shift the high low spliter.

Re: Crazy idea

The trans shop that we used to get our rebuilds from had a ten speed in a 3/4 ton shop truck with a 454. The guy told me the flywheel, clutch and bell housing came from something like a C60 with a big block, and he used a small electric compressor and tank mounted in the box of the utility body to run the shifter. The fun part was getting the driveline made up. Don't remember about mounts.......

Re: Crazy idea

I'm with the others that question the "why' of wanting to do this. I think GMCMAX is correct.......the old C-60 trucks had a 427 ( I think) with an 8 spd. (4 low/4 high?)....or was it a 5 spd tranny with a 2 spd diff.? Yeah, I think the latter is correct, but dont hold me to it. I could be wrong. My memory is trying to recall the early 80s when I drove a gas job.I don't know if you could mate a RoadRanger to a gas engine without some serious modifications, if it could be done at all.

Re: Crazy idea

Seems like to much of a hassle to make that work. I guess anything is possible but why do that.

Re: Crazy idea

I've seen dump trucks with gas motors and a 10 speed. If that's what you're working on it's o.k. A tree trimmer in my neighborhood has that set-up in his bucket truck.

I drove a '74 C-60 tandem axle dump that had a 427, a 5-speed main box and a 4-speed auxillary box. Single-speed rear axles. Good thing I was a lot younger person, split shifting was a bear. The auxillary box was non-syncro all the way.

Why not look at a 5-speed gear box, then put a Gear Vendors O/D on that? With the money you're talking about spending, along with the machine work needed, this would be cheaper....and not cheap.

Re: Crazy idea

You just don`t need all those split gears in a light truck.Sure,it`s cool to run through them all. But,I`m going with a GearVendors auxilary unit.It can split gears, too. My truck has a Muncie M22 4spd with 4 full gears.I`ll have more gear selection than I`ll ever need, mostly overdrive.
