sbc z-bar mount question

I went to look at a 283 today to swap for my tired 250 w/4 speed. I looked and couldn't find mounting holes for my clutch z-bar Do some sbc have them and others don't? Am I overlooking something? I'm getting a good deal on this motor and would hate it if it doesn't work out.

Re: sbc z-bar mount question

I just took my 283 out and th P.O. jerry rigged it like this. I just transplanted a 350 in the truck, and the hole does not line up with the bracket, but what he had made does. the piece that goes on to the back of the bell housing I don't need anymore if you want it.

I'll p.m. you on the part. I guess that means your 283 didn't have holes?
Here's something else weird. The distributor is on the front of the motor. The owner said it's a Buick motor. Is that gonna cause me problems?

Re: sbc z-bar mount question

These are the parts I need, so the only part available is the l-bracket on the front of the bell housing. You can see in the second picture that the hole on the block doesn't line up with the bracket - I put a 6 inch bolt into the hole to illustrate that. That's why I needed the rest of the bracket.

Re: sbc z-bar mount question

As an aside, if the motor is a Buick, and you're not a mechanic or pretty savey on the interchanges, you might be better off staying with a chevy engine - even at a good price, you are going to be trying to figure things out down the road in terms of parts that fit, etc. That's why I went with a basic 350 for now. There's millions of them out there. If you buy it just because it was a good deal, you may be cursing yourself in the long run. Just my .02.

Re: sbc z-bar mount question

I don't think Buick had a 283. They had an aluminum 215 that would be .

Buick won't bolt up to your transmission without an adapter (spelled PITA) and you would likely have to fab motor mounts. If it's like the v6 the fuel pump is on the wrong side too.

I`ve seem a variety of offset engine-side bell crank mounts for trucks.

Re: sbc z-bar mount question

I talked to our mechanic at work today. (40 plus years wrenching) He said that swap would be a total pain.
So, I'll keep looking. Meanwhile the 250 started running rough on the way home. I pulled the dist cap and the dist shaft is so loose I can wiggle it around with my fingers. Let's order a new distributor and waste more of Todd's money.
