307 hissy fit?

hey all.

my 307, which ran very reliable, albight rich, decided it doesn't want to run anymore.

First issue. it'll run when i'm cranking - that is, it'll fire, but as soon as i get off the eky, it dies.

second - the wiring along the top of the firewal started to smoke. i traced it to a wire splice that wasn't coated - i think.

third - i sprayed some cabr cleaner down the hatch, along with working the throttle to see if there were streams of fuel going in (there was), and tried cranking over. there was a loud *POP*, and then it would just crank. so..back fire.

i dunno what the issue is. i'm thinking maybe my plugs and wires are shot?

any insight would be helpful, so..yeah,. thanks in advance! i appreciate it.

Re: 307 hissy fit?

if it ran rich for awhile - the plugs could very likely be fouled -- but they will still usually start unless they are really crusted over ---- hmmm

Re: 307 hissy fit?

Check if you have power to the coil with ignition on run position. Maybe your coil is only getting power while in crank????

Re: 307 hissy fit?

fuel - check
spark - check?
timing - SHOULDN'T change on it's own but check - loose dizzy?

Check the wiring from the back of the ignition, out...
Then I'd check your dist - if points, clean - if HEI - verify 12v.

Re: 307 hissy fit?

Since you had things apart, I'd double check the timing. Dist may be off a bit.
Also, you had the cab off, so check your grounds. Make sure you got them all hooked back up.

Re: 307 hissy fit?

check the ballast resistor/ignition supply wire & coil. Condensers going bad in points ignitions can cause symptoms similar to yours as well. Good hunting.

Re: 307 hissy fit?

If you washed down the truck before you painted it with the front clip off, you could have got water in the distributor also. I'd pop the cap and check for moisture/corrosion. It's also FREE to do that!

Re: 307 hissy fit?

found the problem!

one of the wires on the starter was touching a header tube. apparently, it was the "run" circuit of the ignition, where as the "start" circuit was still functional, hense...it running while the engine was cranking over.

i was at school when i posted that, and it was driving me nuts. little did i know, my dad read the note i left him when he came home for lunch, and had already diagnosed them problem, lol.

so, yup. she runs like a top still. just have to get a manual conversion for the choke, and pick up my wire loom tomorrow, and she *should* be good.

thanks for all the advice guys!

you really hit on just about every possibility. i appreciate it greatly!

-Sam.
