i ended up loosening the bolts that hold the strike plate from the inside of the cab... not an easy task! i got the bolts loose enough that the door just popped opened. i looked at the assembly and the strike plate and couldnt see anything wrong with it.. i guess if you didnt have the those unwanted demons your not doing it right!

check the wear pattern on all of the pieces that will tell you whats up. you blame it on gremlins and it will do it again. here is a trick i learned: clean up the latch and striker with layout blueing and check where the dye has been rubbed off and adjust as needed.
