Starting issue! - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Here's the deal-

I have had this issue come up a few times:

I start my truck and drive it, say, to the store. I come out to start it. Turn the key and... nothing. No click. Engine doesn't turn. Nothing. I then proceed to get pissed. Then wait . Then try again... Then as I am thinking I need a tow I try again, a few hours later and wal-la, it starts right up. This has happened about 4 times in the last year. The one variable that stands out is when this happens I have a load in the back, though not very heavy. It must be related to the electrical/starting system, I just can't figure out where. It can't be the battry charge. It can't be the alternator. I don't see how it could be the physical wires... could it be the starter? I am stumped!

Sounds like the starter is getting the dreaded heatsoak problem. Buy a new starter and get a starter heat wrap from http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...68&D=%2D118668 and install them. You should have no problems after that.

I replaced my starter and it fixed the same problem

It can be wire related also, the wires get weak after being heated up time after time and current just won't go through. Most wires of this age need replaced going to starter/oil doesn't help them any either. A quick/cheap thing to try is to replcae the wires...I always change the batt cable to a zero gauge also...I hate starting problems.
