Hey guys,

About to start on a 30x40 garage unattached garage. I want a lift in it, but need to make sure that I go with the right height. How high should I go or what is the minimum I need to go to still have a lift???

Hey, Brian go over to www.garagejournal.com you will find more info than you can absorb and some facts about types of lifts and such.They ain't quite as cool as 67-72 guys but they are working on it.They even use a layout pretty much like this so it's easy to learn to navigate(If I can anyone can)There is also a wealth of info on organization and storage options.Plenty of info on wiring,plumbing,air lines,and other shop tips and equipment.

Go to sites that sell lifts , my memory sucks but I think I recall ones that advertised lifts for 10 ft walls . but study up ! good luck on your garage!

I say use 22 ft walls.That should cover your 30X40 garage and give you about a 24X40 man cave loft.If you have that big a shop you may need to spend some time out there.

We have a 35 x 55 with 12' walls. We have a lift that works great with all cars and trucks.

See how high your truck is from the bottom of frame-up*,add your height and what would be a good reach to your floorboard.Add more for ceiling clearance.I`d think about 14-16 feet

*or bottom of tires,depending on lift design.Whatever will sit on the lift.

Im voting 14 unless you can volt it and have the lift in the center of the garage. my lift and 12 walls didnt work so well with a big truck onit. I still had to duck when it was up all the way.

Measure your truck from floor to top of the highest point which should be the cab. Then add your hieght & reach to that. This should get you about the right size walls. You may want to add a couple of feet for good measure.
You could always put the top floor in as a trap door's to open when you need the room.

To get a lift that you can raise high enough for a 6' person to stand under the vehicle without having to squat.........you will need at least 12'.
15-16' high ceilings give you plenty of room and will allow for a loft you can stand in if you decide to build one..

Now...........if that is too much $$$$$............12' would be your minimum!!!!

Mine are just over 16'............with the lift I have there is 6'3" under the vehicle.

Well, I'm 5'10, but all of my trucks are lowered

So that won't be a problem. I'll see what it costs to go to 14 foot. I got a price on delivery and setup yesterday. Concrete, electrical, and insulation seperate.

Included is a poor picture, but I have an 8000# Rotary Two Post lift. The ceiling is 12' high and there is more than enough clearance between it and the ceiling. As you can see my ceiling is finished and there is still plenty of room. The Rotary lifts have two height settings (one is for an 11' ceiling and the other is the 12'). I am glad that I chose the 12' height, because I can easily stand under my lift and work. OF course, this lift thing leads to other problems. You will have to spend more money for the right tools, such as a drain hub for oil changes, and a post style tranny jack. No fun having a lift withouthe right tools.

Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.
