Top Bedside Trim Install

Hi, Anybody have a secret for installing the top bedside trim?? There is enough slop betweem the trim and the clip that when I try to push it into the holes on the bed, the clip pushes into the trim and when you let go of the trim it falls back off. I had good luck putting some small wood spacers between the trim and the clip to stop the clip from pushing into the trim. Hope this makes sense, the wood takes the slop out and makes the clip go into the hole further. Any better ideas out there?

Also, I ended up drilling the upper trim holes in the bed after paint. It appears that doing this caused a small dent at each hole. Is there a good way to pop them back out?? I have installed the trim on one side so far. I notice the dents with the trim installed (very picky eye) so hopefully I can make it look better by poping some it back out.

Thanks, Greg
