60's mustang tank into 59???

I thought there was a photo or message about putting a mid-60's Mustang tank behind the rearend in a 55-59? I have used the search and cannot find it. Has anyone done this? My recollection is that the tank drops right into the frame from above. Thanks Patrick

I have been waiting for one of my Ford buddies to dig out his damaged 69 Mach1 tank so I can do a moch up and then order a new one, the prices are right for a new one

I found a place on-line that has the dimensions and checked against my frame. The won't fit without moving the crossmember between the rear spring perches. The message I saw must have been for an earlier model (48-54).

Re: 60's mustang tank into 59???

I've seen some truck where they have removed the rear cross member between the spring perches. I don't want to do that, I'm concerned about the frame speading, compressing or getting out of square in that area under off-road torque loads (my truck is a 4wd). I'd still like to see how the tank fits.

Re: 60's mustang tank into 59???

You may want to measure up some of the following tanks. You may have to trim the lips on the frame to get these in and custom build mounts for the straps.

77-82 GM van tank (Hollander #1052). 31" (not including the flange lips) x 22" x 12.375" . 1.25" filler on the driver's side rear.

1983-95 Van tanks (Hollander#1295 & 1585) are the same except for 1.625" filler.

1987-95 van (Hollander # 1418 & 1583) shows the same except for no filler specs.

If your using a fuel injection system, these have you typical GM big "twist lock" senders.

Re: 60's mustang tank into 59???

While we are on this subject, is there a rear fill (center fill) that I can access under the license plate in the roll pan, Muatang, Monte Carlo ,Buick Regal 70's, vintage.
Does anybody have a pic of this operation?
