anybody know how to lubricate a speedo cable correctly for the 67-72 tks ?

Bob,

I don't know if they still make it but there used to be a speedo cable lube in a small plastic dispenser, available at the auto parts stores. You took the cable loose from the speedometer and squirted it down inside the housing.

Basically the stuff you can get at NAPA is powdered graphite.

I have used white lithium grease with zero problems -- however, I understand it's not really the best thing, as it can get a bit too gummy. Apparently graphite is a better lube. Of course you should pull the inner cable out of the housing and clean it thoroughly before lubing...

do you pull the cable out from the top or bottom ? i,ve used white grease for years on tach & speedo cables but never did a 67-72 chevy tk. cable. if i tilt the dash back and unhook the cable can i pull the inner cable out then ?

You should be able to inless the clip out on the fire wall has it to snug. Must cables want let you pull the dash out without having it disconnected at the speedometer.

The new speedo cable I bought came with instructions that specifically said to use the graphite spray lube but be careful... It will make a mess and even stain your skin. It's generally just a PITA to clean up if you get it somewhere other that where it's intended to go. My experience with this stuff went someting like this... Insert the small extension tube into the end of the speedo cable housing, press down on the actuator, tube shoots out of the end of the valve getting spray lube everywhere. As you can imagine a few four letter words were used. LOL

i,ve used white lithium grease for cables for over 30 yrs in semi trucks and its what i,am gonna use in my 72 pickup if i can get the inner cable out of the outer housing. thanks

Sorry I didn't get back sooner, Bob... It's been many years since I lubed my truck's cable, but I disconnected it from the back of the speedometer and pulled it out. I recall it being a bit of a pita to get to -- but I can't remember if I loosened the dash panel or not...

Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.
