Re: 500hp
i was just reading an article in car craft about a 383 build that made 540hp and something like 517 ftlbs on pump gas and no NOS all for $4800. its worth reading.

Re: 500hp
On Power Block TV they had Gale Banks on their and they built a 1500 HP SBC.
I actually looked on the Banks web site and couldnt find any info on the build or any info for SBC but anyway they did it on Power Block (TV CAR shows on Spike TV} |

I don't have 500 HP, but my 84 SWB with a 385 stroker motor is pushing about 400 at the crank and it can be hard on the rear end parts, if I want it to be. I had to pay a little more than the $4800.00 [rice for the motor work and parts. |

Re: 500hp
It took me less than 20 miles to fry my stock 350 tranny, so I agree on the being hard on the drive train.

Re: 500hp
well i am in the process of assembling my rearend right now. its a 9" rear narrowed, 40 spline chromoly hardened strange axles. 40 spline spool (it was my only option) aftermarket strange carrier case, forged yoke, 4:10 yukon gears. if i brake 40 spline axles there is something seriously wrong. im also working on my 4 link and coilover rear
as for the motor and tranny, forged internals on the motor the price i gave is for parts and machine work, i assemble myself, but it doesnt include headders or distributer, cause i had those lying around already tranny= viper t56 |

Re: 500hp
How does it feel? Well how heavy is your truck? If you are moving 6000lbs, then it will feel like you are driving a mid 13 second vehicle, but one that uses torque to move and it wont be violent feeling at all. If your truck is 1800lbs, tube frame with all body parts being fiberglass, then when you stomp the skinny pedal on the right it will feel like you were rear ended by a semi doing 65 mph.
Some of us are very impressed by a big HP number, but the HP alone can be misleading. HP is derived from a mathematical equation. Torque x rpm / 5252 = hp. So the higher the rpm the higher the hp provided it still makes torque above 5252 rpm. You can get 400 hp from a 289sbf or 283sbc relatively easily, just spin it to 8000-9000 rpm and make about 250ftlbs of torque there. It will make 400 hp but feel like a pooch under 6500 rpm. I guess my point about that is it depends on the vehicle and where the engine makes the power that matters. I tend to prefer the engines that make 500ftlbs just off idle and around 600-700ftlbs at 6000 rpm. They need a big arm or a blower to do that, but that makes for the most fun cruising around. For reference the 455 Pontiac that was in my street/strip Firebird made 540hp@ 5800 and 564ftlbs@ 4000, had to over gear it to keep it in the 12s and avoid the expense of the cage and other safety items needed for 11s at the time. But at 3700lbs it ran 12.0 very consistently with 4.11 gears, with a best of 11.7@115. When I put the 3.42 gears behind that torque monster it picked up a bit and started running 11.50 through the mufflers until it broke the Th400. Being a relatively heavy car it wasnt super fast, but dropping the same engine in my 5000lb 76 would slow it even further. That isnt even considering the aerodynamic requirements of pushing double the frontal area over 100mph. If you have a ton of torque and it happens to make a bunch of HP, then it will still be a fun ride. If you have a heavy truck with an engine that lacks bottom end torque but has 500 hp over 6000 rpm, it will feel sluggish until you get it wound up into the power band. Just FYI nd a bit of bragging.. The 462 ci Pontiac that made that power cost me a grand total of $2700 to build, it ran brackets twice a month and street raced quite often for 7 years. The only thing that killed it was when someone push lead shot in the valve cover, and a piece made it through the pump screen, pump, and into a main bearing. I guess the sbc crowd doesnt like to lose to a grocery getter that never sees over 6000 rpm. |

Re: 500hp
sounds like a mean motor to me. while i belive my truck weighs around 4000 and i should be making about 525hp and about the same amount of torque all about 4-6k rpm. with 4:10 gears and a t56 it should be pretty fun to drive on the street
