2wd to 4x4?
i have a a 2wd 70 GMC 1/2 ton i would like to convert to a 4x4 as a long-term project i was just wondering how hard it would be to convert and what needs to be converted to make it a 4x4 thanks for any and all replies

Your best and easiest way to convert the truck is to obtain a truck 4x4 frame and running gear. It then becomes an easy swap out of sheet metal.

I read about people converting 4x4 Blazers to 2wd all the time on here, doing the crossmember swaps and etc in a weekend or two. I don't see why you could not do the swap in the other direction just as easily.

I bought a '73 4x4 rustbucket from a neighbor and used everything from it in my '70 C10. Took about a week. If you use the 2WD frame you'll have to drill the frame for the tranfer case mounts and the leaf springs. I also used the booster and proportional valve for the power brakes off the '73.

If you cant find a 4x4 frame it can be done with a 2wd frame tho i wouldnt recomend it you would need bothe axles, spring hangers, shackels, springs, trans and t case, trans crosmember, drive shafts, shocks, Front crossmember, on a two wheel drive wont clear the front axle,
 pretty much all the mounts off of a 4x4 frame We once did it to a 83 crew cab did it in about two weeks, we worked on it every day all day Try findin a 4x4 crewcrab frame... next to impossibe!Basicly just keep an eye out for a 4x4 frame lot easier and faster just my 02. chris |
