Re: Kinda Like BURBARIFIC, Only FURTHER!

All I can say is WOW! A LOT of drivin', a LOT of fun, and a LOT of friends along the way. Without gettin' all MUSHY, I gotta tell you that I am really PROUD to be part of this group. I could write for a MONTH on all the strange and wonderful things I saw and did in 1 short week, but will try to give you guys the Cliffs notes. I want to thank Sean for believing in me enough to hold on to this machine for me until I could get there and bring it home. It was SUCH a thrill to meet 2 of the boards ICONS, Rob (Hart Rod) and Jodie (GMC Junkie). Rob is JUST a genious, as well as an officer and a gentleman.(by the way, the Burberly Hillbillies thing was a HOWL) Jodie is a RIOT, kind of a cross between a Cali Sally and a Southern Belle. And then there's THE Andy, who guided me all the way home with his knowledge and humor. Passed up a TON of fun cities that I never passed up before in my Air Force flyboy days. Got to see a Corvette sticking up out of a water filled ditch like a 'glass croc. Traveled over 3000 miles without wipers, music (radio works) or a speeding ticket. Saw a severely twisted up cactus in NM that I dubbed the Cactopus. (sorry no pic) Got to see Jodie do her impression of a Redneck Crackhead (VERY funny) Got on I-70 East a mere 2 miles ahead of my sons Basketball Teams bus (how's THAT for timing) and got to see the WHOLE game. What a way to end a GREAT adventure. Have not tallied up the actual miles and Gas receipts yet, but I will be doing it soon, and will post for all you inquiring minds. Wanna thank ALL you guys again for the kind words, and offers of food, shelter and comraderie. I wish I could have stopped and bench raced with every single one of you. I hope you ALL will meet up with me at the national board meet in TN this year. Can't WAIT. Take care, Mike (Hot Rod) Todd

Re: Kinda Like BURBARIFIC, Only FURTHER!

Man, I wish I'd known about this thread last week! I've been dying to hear how it was all going (other than the text messages)!

Mike, it was great to meet you! I'm glad the trip went well.

The truck was originally owned by a guy named Doug Peterson who owned a Can Am team in the late '60s called "Newport Racers". The truck hauled a McLaren Mk1C (as well as others as I recall). The only photo I've seen of the McLaren was from the 1969 Can Am race at Laguna Seca. Traditionally Peterson drove the car, but made the critical mistake of telling his crew chief to do whatever it took to win the race. His crew chief went off and hired Ed Leslie to drive the car!

I got the truck from a guy who was either the second or third owner. His name was "Beenie" and he was an old race mechanic who worked for Phil Reiley up in SF. Reiley is probably the top restorer of vintage F1 cars in the US and as I understand it, that truck has had some very interesting cars on the back of it.

I though you'd enjoy a little more of the history on the truck. I'm glad the trip went smoothly and I'm really happy that it went to a good home!

Later,

Sean

Re: Kinda Like BURBARIFIC, Only FURTHER!

Here's a photo of a Mk1C for reference. The Newport Racer's car was the more traditional McLaren Orange and I think wore #92.

Great history. Too bad someone doesn't have a pic of one of those race cars on the truck. That would be a prize! Thanks for sharing the story!

Re: Kinda Like BURBARIFIC, Only FURTHER!

That's what so cool about Jodie, she ad libs these little mini-skits and it is REALLY funny. I'm not even sure she knows how funny she is because it just comes natural to her. We were talking about how it would be so nice to be on "public assistance" and just drive around the country and live it up, and she breaks into this, like, trailer trash queen on dope routine. You had to be there to fully appreciate it, but it was really funny. My cheeks were hurting from laughing. Thanks to Sean for the little McClaren history bit too. I am going to research this truck extensively. Will fill you guys in as I go.

Re: Kinda Like BURBARIFIC, Only FURTHER!

Knowing the history on the ramp truck is truly very cool! I've always invisioned/hoped/dreamed of seeing an old pic mine 35 years ago with some famous race on the back of it, although it was probably built for a small time drag or dirt track car. I really wish I did know. I can dream though! I don't know if you've seen these old pics below, but if not here's a few for your picture file. Also the link below is dedicated to 1 tons, and has probably 25 -30 other 67 - 72 car haulers on it.

Man have I ever looked for that photo... I have only found one photo of the acutal race car though so I'm not too hopeful! I have been meaning to chase down one last lead to get in touch with Peterson and if that ever works out, I'll make sure to get any/all info over to Mike. Mike I'll also forward you Beenie's last known email address. That guy's always good for a story or two if you can get a hold of him!

Those photos of the race haulers are awesome! I've only seen a few pictures. The Chaparral Trans-Am team had a nice C60 that they hauled with. I've seen photos of Jungle Jim's Camaro on the back of a C30 though... Now if only we could get one to come with Jungle Pam!

Re: Kinda Like BURBARIFIC, Only FURTHER!

Thanks for the link to the one-ton thread! My last truck ('69) was a one ton cemetary dump truck K30. I put a regular bed on it, painted it flat black and put a set of 38" tires on it. Crazy truck that I drove straight into the ground!

Re: Kinda Like BURBARIFIC, Only FURTHER!

OK, here is the final total of gas for the trip. $1091.19 (379.7 gallons) from Van Nuys CA to Burgettstown PA. (3387 Atlas miles) For a whopping 8.92 MPG! Man, think of the junk trucks I could have bought with THAT money, PHEW! Better yet, think of the junk trucks I can buy now that I HAVE the ramp truck! Thanks again for riding along with me guys on this once in a lifetime (hopefully not) journey.

Re: Kinda Like BURBARIFIC, Only FURTHER!

dude... you will have to stop here, even if just for a burger. If you say no, I'll have to track you down on the freeway and make you stop.
Coming up I 75 to I 70 will add like 60 - 70 miles... (unless You have buisness in Dayton) if you pick up I71 just north of Cincy, it;ll bring you right up to columbus to I70...and I am only 6 miles west of that, as is one of the best burger joints you'll ever eat at. (you familiar with the butter burger?)
But, we have plenty of time for all this... and we can discss this on YOUR road trip thread!

goodguys meets up everywhere.. you talking about the columbus event? The one here in columbus is on the far west side, exit 91 off of I70 in the Hilliard area on the outskirts of a wall mart
Culvers is the name of the place, and they call there burgers the butter burger.
It looks like Columbus is the closest one to pittsburg. http://www.culvers.com/
