Question 203 shifting prob

Ive got th350 with a 203 t case on the back and its Pita to get it to shift from 2hi to 4hi most of the time
Ive got the part time convert in it now.
Ive put a longer shifter on it but it is still hard to shift.
I know 203 are notorius for this but what have you guys done to fix this
Ive switched back and forth on two stock shifters and its still the same

So do you guys think its in the shifter or the t case
and wat can I do to fix short of just getting a doubler from ord like i want to do(ive got a 205 to do it)!

http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=259943

this is just my farm truck though, so ive went ahead and left it in low... to me, its not worth the effort when i want to put a 4 speed in it anyway

Re: 203 shifting prob

believe it or not, that mud on mine is after TWO passes through the pond. it wouldnt spin and the ground was so hard from our lack or rain this summer (we were like 24 inches below normal), that there wasnt any mud. the mud was only as deep and the brown circle around the tire....

now after this rain weve had this week, im dying to go play!!

Click the link from Blue_71 above. Cleaning and fresh lubrication are the keys to this. The slightest grit between the plates in the shifter housing will cause problems.

Re: 203 shifting prob

I know this is off topic, but is the NP 205 & 203 all gear drive? I havent owned one until now. The Dana 20 in my Blazer is all gear so I'm curious if the NP in my C/20 4 x 4 is the same - all gear?

NP205=Strong gear driven part time 4wd t-case.
NP203=Lighter chain driven full time 4wd t-case.
The t-case in your '70 should be a NP205 if its original..And btw they are called K20s,just thought I'd tell you so you can type that if you feel and not type out the longer version...
As for the 203s being "a piece of chit" Well,they definitely aren't anything like a NP205..full time 4wd unless a kit is added,chain driven,sucky shifter...I think they are way worse than a NP205 but if properly taken care of,it will be trouble-less..I rebuilt the t-case in my '79,put in a new chain even though the old was ok,but just did it so I might not have to later on...I put it in lo-loc about once a month to get the lube moving through it all and have never had any issues...Of course,I'm putting in a TH400/NP205 in '08 when I put the 454 in..

Re: 203 shifting prob

Thanks Guys, I was hoping the 205 was all gear and very relieved to hear it is. I do believe what i have in the Truck is stock and a 205 because it looks pretty darn big and its all cast casing.
Yer right, I thinkl I'll go with the 'K20" name it is shorter and it seems to be the lingo here, lol. I just get hung up on what the dang Emblems say..Maybe one day I'll get bored and take K-5 Emblems and replace the C with a K on mine! That'll mess with people's heads when they see it.
