A WHILE BACK I PUT A TILT COLUM OUT OF A 72 GMC SUBURBAN IN MY 72. IT WORKS WELL AND IS NICE BUT..........THE STEERING WHEEL IS TOO CLOSE TO ME------ MY QUESTION IS WHAT IS THE CORRECT DISTANCE FROM CHEST TO TOP OF STEERING WHEEL SUPPOSE TO BE??

I like big ones! Your trying to see if the wheels is to close to you?? Have you seen the link on setting the column in closer to the dash??

Depends on If the driver works at H(.)(.)ters or not. Its a prerequisite that their "chest" is a little closer to the steering wheel than average.

When I changed the seat I was too close to the stock wheel , so I put in a later model wheel and it solved my problem .

Okay that was low, but I've seen a couple of threads on pulling the column away from the driver somewhere on the board.

If you want to move the column farther forward pull the intermediate shaft (The metal shaft between rag joint and the column in the engine compartment) out of the truck,drill out the plastic rivets,collapse the shaft and put it back in..Then you just have to loosen the column and move it forward.Look in the FAQ section for a thread about Van Tilt installs.You have to collapse the intermediate shaft when installing a van tilt so the directions for collapsing it will be what you need to read.

It can only go in one place unless you alter it. Like drilling the nylon rivettes out in the intermediate shaft. You will also have to move the nutral safety switch. WES

If you end up having to collapse the Intermediate shaft and move the neutral safety switch I would not do that to the factory style column. I would sell the factory column for around $300 and buy a van tilt for anywhere from $35-150 and modify it . Then use the profits for more parts. My logic is that if you end up moving those you just as well use a van tilt, Modify it as necessary and have it ready for the swap.

Moving the tilt is really not much of an option, even if you removed the N-swth. The problem is the bowl is only 1" from the dash! So you can only move it 1" before it hits.
The standard column has more room to move down, before the bowl hits...about 3". Still have to move the N-swth.
Note: In the stock location the tilt places the bottom of the wheel hub 8" from the dash. The standard col 7". You can get more chest clearance from a standard col and you can move it down further...but, remember...as the wheel moves down, away from your chest, it gets closer to your legs. You are going to need a little steering wheel to make it work.
