Steering wheel slop?

I have an 1988. The steering is loose and is not tight. Short of buying one from somebody, can they be repaired with some type of kit. I notice rebuilt ones on ebay go for 150++. Hoping to find a better solution? thanks

Re: Steering wheel slop?

You mean the column itself is loose? If it is what I think you mean it is a tilt column and it just seems to slop about. There are some bolts that come loose in the swivel that makes the column tilt. To fix it takes some special tools, a long afternoon, and alot of cursing. If it were me, I would just change the column. A bit more money, but way less work.

Re: Steering wheel slop?

I think there is 3 bolts that come loose, and they just need to be retightened. We used to run into that problem alot at the shop I worked at in Akron, OH. Those guys would drive with their seats almost fully reclined, and use the steering wheel to pull themselves back up when getting out of the car, which would cause the problem your having. You do need a few special tools, which you could possibly rent from the parts store.

Re: Steering wheel slop?

Three bolts and possibly the one latge nut in the center. The '89 I had did that about once every two years. I finally put some blue loctite on the nut to prevent it from coming loose. And like GMoTR stated, it from using the wheel to get in and out of the vehicle.
