5 to 6 lug conversion?

My 77 is 5 lug and I was wondering if I can convert it to 6 lug for all the new GM wheels.I'm asking because my wife has a 2007 Tahoe LTZ that has the factory 20 inch polished wheels .She wants to lift it a get new wheels.I think thay are my favorite factory wheels ever. They are the 5 spoke polished one's.I think they would look tuff on my 77.I don't know if they would tuck either? What do you guy's think? Thanks

The rear is easy. You can swap your 5 lug axles for 6 lug. I don't know how to do the front since the 73-87 6 lug trucks wer 4x4. You might look at using 6 lug rotors from the 88 and newer Chevy trucks on the front.

those wheels have a ton of backspacing -- you might check that first before going any further --- if you could get them to bolt up, they may hit your inner fender in front and be too close to the springs in back

Yeah I would check if you will need spacers or not first.

Re: 5 to 6 lug conversion?

what would be cheapest/easiest is to buy some billet aluminum wheel spacers/adaptors on ebay. they'll run you about $130 for a pair, convert any lug pattern (two piece), and given that the specs of the tahoe rims is 20x8.5 with a 6" backspacing, you'll need a minimum of 2.5", max of 3.75" of spacer to make the wheels look good in the fenderwells and keep them from rubbing anything. i have a set of 3" ones on my truck, (rims are 20x8.5 with 5.25" bs) have never had a problem, and the look you get is amazing.

Your going to spend a lot of money to save a little. You might be able to go backwards with 67-71 parts. They were 6 lug

There are safety issues with wheel spacers -- thats one reason they are not legal for nhra competition or recommended for much else (which has little to do with the street, but if the nhra does not feel they are appropriate on vehicles going straight in a 1/4 mile, then i dont want them on my vehicle ) -- 3" is a humongous spacer

those stats are from when the spacers first came out on the market and were made of wimpy aluminum, now with the stronger billet aluminum, they are way stronger. although, still illegal on the strip, their perfectly fine for road use. (not many drivetrain parts last on multiple runs on the drag strip) bolting 3" wheel spacers on a street truck with 5.25" backspacing on the rims is no different than bolting on rims with a backspacing of 2.25" that ar 8.5" wide. providing the lugs are tight, i trust them. i drive my truck pretty hard at times, and have never had a problem. (so far 8000 miles) i trust them completely!

Re: 5 to 6 lug conversion?

Wheel spacers increase the load on your wheel bearings, by having the wheel further out, thus more of a cantilever action on the wheel bearings.....

I wouldn't run them to save my life, it's the cheap way out
