No oil press sender? Another thread!

Hey guys, I read the low oil pressure thread and it made me realize, I don't haven't had accurate oil pressure in awhile. As many of you already know, I swapped out 4.3 from a 92 to an 88. The 88 had that funky looking oil pressure sender near the filter, while the 92 did not. Anyway.

I have a pegged oil pressure gauge that never moves. The ecm is from the 92, but the gauges are not (incompatable clusters). I figured the sender would give me a oil pressure light if something went wrong, but after reading the thread I think maybe not. Do I need to install that christmas tree looking thing into the 92 engine for oil pressure readings?

Here is a pic of the block right above the oil filter. Is it even possible to install one? Heck, do I need it?

I think NOT!

The oil sending units for gages are so big you will probably need something between the sender and the block.

They way it is now you would not know if you lost oil pressure until damage occurred. Heck, I guess it depends on your definition of need.

Keep in mind this is on my 5.7, but this is what I got. 2nd pic was taken from the radiator side, the macro mode on my camera is pretty good. That white blur in the 1st pic is the oil filter.

Re: No oil press sender? Another thread!

Ok, thanks guys I will be getting one now. Now, is getmeontheroad correct about the location? The hole with the allen head plug?

Another question is: I had a working oil pressure gauge in the 92 without the "christmas tree" and I switched over the ecm, same wires too. Is it simply a matter of the gauge cluster? Just curious....

Lastly, is that sender in your pic an OEM or did you have to flub a neck at that length?

Thanks guys

The sender it self is a duralast from AZ, and I dont know what you mean by flub a neck. The brass thing I dont know if it is factory. But if you do put one in use thread tape and follow the directions on useing it in my low pressure thread. Also the brass pipe on mine, right now is not very tight, its a little more than hand tight, but keep that in mind when you tighten yours because you need room to put the sender on. That pic above was after about 100 miles, and you can see it doesnt leak.

Should be good.

The wire that connects to the dash oil gauge in a 1992 goes to a three wire sender by the distributor. On your 1988 the wire that connects to the dash oil gauge goes down by the oil filter.

Different year, different wire harness.

Could you open up your wire harness and change it? I see no problem with that.

Did you use a three wire sending unit up by the distributor, or did you use the two wire from the 1988?

Re: No oil press sender? Another thread!

Chevytech, I was just thinking about doing that. Changing the wire harness I mean. It would be a lot less work and the wires are all there anyway. Because the engine worked before with the long 3 prong sensor I was going to try that out.

A local junkyard tried to charge me $20 for a harness and a sensor that I didn't know would work or not. Silly.

I will look into it all and let you guys know how it goes. Thanks!
