Temp Question

on the 98 K2500 Ext. Cab, Short bed, 7.4L. Does anyone know what the factory temp was? Mine is currently running at 210 all day. I just had the manifold gaskets replaced but the T-stat was not. I am curious to see if i should replace it or not and go with like a 185 degree or something. The truck is stock for the most part. Just a K&N Filter. No other performance mods.

It runs at 210 but does it over heat? Is the temp. sender unit in the block? Is this some thing that just happened [ running at 210] or has it always been like this? If the temp sending unit is in the block they tend to run hotter then when installed in the intake. I'm going to move mine to the intake when I do my next rad flush. If it is not causing you any grief I would just leave it.

Thanks for the reply. You know that is a good question i am not sure if the sensor is in the block or not i have not looked. As far as the temp it self. Every since i have owned the truck it has run at 210. Never goes over that. And the coolest it has ever been is 1 line under 210 when the weather is cool. Now of course i do live in Houston so that might help also.

The sender for the guage should be in the head (it is on small block) and there should be one in the intake for the fuel injection/computer. I am going to guess since the truck is fuel injected, that the thermostat is a 195. That is common to almost all fuel injected vehicles. The temp at the head could be slightly higher just due to location (inbetween exhaust ports and near the exhaust manifold). All of the vehicles I have owned run between 190 and 210 on the guage. The temp guage could be slightly off from vehicle to vehicle just due manufacturing, aftermarket parts, etc. 210 is about par for the course. If it went slightly higher it would still be ok. The engine should not boil over until about 240 degrees with a 16 lb radiator cap.
