problem with 4x4

its on a 91 1500 with 375k. its a plow truck and while plowing this weekend, front wheels quit working. lights up on the floor shifter but it makes lots of racket. even when in 2h. before this weekend, the cv joints clicked when in 4h and turning but otherwise seemed to work good.

what is the trouble shooting process? how do i identify or rule out the transfer case, joints, hubs, etc? i have never really messed with 4 wheel drives.

Re: problem with 4x4

Those trucks are notorious for failure of the 4x4 actuator switch. Borg Warner part #FWD10. They usually go for a bit over $100. Thats usually the first thing we suggest to people w/your problem BUT the noises you describe could mean something else?

Re: problem with 4x4

jack the front up and take turns rotating each wheel and drive shaft. observe what it is connected to, listen for odd noises
I'm sorry, that is probably the last thing you want to do on snowy ground.

I would not be surprised at all at a plow breaking a half ton diff.

I believe the '4x4 posi-lock' product sells for less than the cost of 3 fancy actuators, and it seems it would be reliable.

Re: problem with 4x4

went down to the shop tonight and unhooked the plow so i could get the front off the ground. sure enough, the right cv is broken.

thanks guys!

for future reference: if the light indicates the front is engaged, is the actuator working? or if it does not light up, its faulty?

Re: problem with 4x4

on my 89, the 2 times the actuator has went out, the light in the floor quit working. fixed the actuator, and the light started working again
