anyone have more than 2 fuel tanks?

My truck was plumbed for a third tank that must have sat in the bed, the fuel line and filter run up in the forward corner. I want to put a third tank back in but all the ones I see in catologs say not for gasoline. Are there any ideas of a how or where to mount another tank? I was thinking of finding one that sits in between the frame rails towards the rear since I dont run a spare tire under the bed I have the room.

How about a Suburban or Blazer tank? Will that work?

Re: anyone have more than 2 fuel tanks?

I'd go with a Suburban or Blazer tank and move the spare to the bed. Having the sending unit hooked up would make it a true third tank.

I'm not trying to knock you or your idea at all, but why a 3rd tank? What's the point?

Well, if your truck is like mine and only gets 6-8mpg at a time, your twin 16 gallon tanks only gets you a little more than 250 miles. Stick anything in the bed or on a trailer behind it and you're reduced to around 150 miles between fill-ups.

A third 20-25 gallon tank would almost double the range between having to stop for go-go juice when driving across North Dakota or Minnesota (which can be rather unfriendly at this time of year due to freezing body parts off in -60* wind chill weather).

I guess that makes sense. I'm perfectly happy with my 16 gallon tank, but I don't drive anywhere but in town. So I guess I didn't really see about the traveling thing.

Yeah what he said Seriously though I plan on doing allot of towing with this truck between NY , PA and I would like a little better range and with 35's on this truck its not easy on the fuel mileage.

I put a 43 gallon Suburban tank between the rails on my truck. The install is really easy, less figuring out a way to run the filler neck...

Does the 43 gallon tank work on shortbeds or is it just longbeds ?

My '91 is a 40 gallon and all the replacement info I can find lists 31 or 40 gallon. Was the 43 a Canada only option? Just wondering. . .

The biggest you can fit in a SWB is the 31 gallon tank. Here is my how to page for the Blazer in a SWB pickup..

Re: anyone have more than 2 fuel tanks?

Been thinkin about stuffin a couple more under there, mainly because the still will be up and running next spring. Takes roughly twice as much alky to go the same distance as gas, best part is it will be super cheap!

some pics of the filler with the big tank would be nice.

Re: anyone have more than 2 fuel tanks?

Kind of an off the wall thought, but something I've been kicking around. How about a combo gas tank/truck box? Northern tool has a 51 and a 60 gallon model. Just a thought.........

I looked at allot of catologs for them and just about everyone says not for transporting gasoline. Not sure why. The only bad part about that for me is I plan on running a cap on the back at times and it would make it hard to fill.

Re: anyone have more than 2 fuel tanks?

Yeah, I was wondering that too. Northern's 51 and 60 say ok for gas, just not california gas. The 70 gallon says for fuel oil, but not gas. Huh? You're right though, it'd be kind of silly with a cap.

Re: anyone have more than 2 fuel tanks?

Guys: The reason the aftermarket tanks say "not for fuel" is for 2 reasons. 1 is saftey, the other is emmisions. I say go ahead and use them for whatever you please, but here's a thought, why not go to your local friendly heavy truck dealer with all the measurements you can think of and see if you can't come up with a tank for a motorhome chassis. Those tanks hold between 80 and 100 gallons. Yup, $325 will fill ya right up. LOL, jim
