Question Rear Tank Short Stepper Pics ?

I did a search last night on 'tank' and got 300 returns, which I read. One rear tank stepper in all those posts.

I am swapping my short fleet bed for a short step bed and will need a way to fill my existing rear tank. The filler is in the bed rail and going with the bed.

Anyone have a rear tank on their short step?

Pics of the fill location, too, maybe?

Thanks, all

Tenmans is a fleetside. Mine has the body lift so it wont help ya much. Its gonna be hard to do it outside of the frame. Your bed is gonna be so close to the frame I dont know if it can be done. I see most stepsides done through the bed floor. Here are pics of a street rod's filler. It can be purchased from some hot rod sites and the cap does not need to be romoved to fill the tank. The last one in the corner is mine.

There is what we came up with for my step. The fill tube goes from the bed side, inside the step fender to the tank.

You can do this or the "sidemarker fill" set-up.

Re: Rear Tank Short Stepper Pics ?

I did one with the side marker filler and was never happy with it. Always a problem with the fit and layout.
Swapped that one over to a bed rail fill with stainless marine fill and marine hose. Liked that one a lot better and it worked first time every time without any leakage, ever.
I use my truck- we live out of town on acres with a two-mile-long road to the house. We have gardens everywhere that require sawdust and mushroom compost every year, and we have a pellet stove in the house and another in my knife shop. So a bed fill isn't for me. Plus this is my daily driver so it gets driven a lot.
Some things just fit better for different people. I wanted this to be really clean and look as stock as possible, so inside the bed wall is perfect. I will post some pics after I get it done.
Thanks, guys!

What kind of problems were you haveing with your setup? I am curious because I never had any problems with mine otherthan the sometimes difficult California smog gas pumps. When I got back to Texas I could always find gas pumps without the large boot on them. What type of problems did you encounter?

Re: Rear Tank Short Stepper Pics ?

The PO did the original behind the marker light, very badly. There was a problem with the fill tube angle that created an actual goose neck like under your kitchen sink. That never did seal correctly. You also had to keep stopping during fueling because the gas would gush back every few seconds, even on the lowest pump speed. They also did a very crappy job with the bed cuts and the entire thing just looked terrible. If you parked on an uphill incline the fuel would drip. They didn't do a great job on the spring setup and you has to put a screw in to hold the marker light closed. Also hard to get the fuel fill nozzle in at the right angle.
So, other than looking like crap, being very hard to use, and dripping fuel it was great

I think I could build one like this that works properly now, and I know Wes at Classic Heartbeat uses and loves this setup. Lots of the guys do.
The one I replaced it with up on top of the bed rail worked great and looked good, too.

I just like the one used on lemon drop better, and it allowed me to just order a part and weld it in.

There is only one operating wrecking yard anywhere near me and they aren't very helpful, so I only go there if absolutely forced. There are always 4 or 5 guys behind the counter that act like you are bothering them. The only answer you ever get it when they point at the row they think your part is on if they have one.

There are a million ways to do almost anything, and most will work correctly. So it usually comes down to whoever pays getting to choose

I retire in three more years and will be making knives full time. This is the last vehicle I ever hope to own, so I want it exactly the way I want it.

This board is`WAY better than sliced bread- and I love how many of you will take time to explain things and take measurements and post pics for everyone else.
And the very best thing about the board is that I get to pick my favorite way of all the tiny details and combine those into MY truck.

I love to look at it. I love to work on it. I love to drive it. I love the way my bride giggles when I light up the tires.

Thanks, all!

Re: Rear Tank Short Stepper Pics ?

As promised, here is a link to the final job, perfectly done by Livrat.

He used the entire blazer neck right up to the final inches.

This is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO sweet! I can't begin to tell you how nice this is [and how happy I am with his work; he did a bunch of other stuff, too, same quality. Charged exactly what he quoted, finished on time, flawless work].

The only tiny glitch is that with the stock blazer neck, the vent tube empties into the neck under the cap. It won't even THINK about filling with the tiny hole in the cap. You just take off the cap and it will fill at full force from the pump.

If the vent tube is added so that it vents to the outside air in the cup, the fumes would keep me pretty tense since I almost always have a lit cigarette in my mouth. That was the reason that Mark used as much of the blazer neck as possible- when the cap is on the vent is sealed and can't blow fumes to the outside air.

The fella with that gorgeous blue truck [sorry, i have only seen his truck, never met him so can't remember his name] installed his fuel fill in the top of the rear stake pocket [fleet bed, and a GREAT job] discussed utilizing another of the outlets on the tank. I heard that and did the same, and ran that hose up with the other two. That hose got the motorcycle racer's one-way valve that only allows air IN, not out. This prevents locking up with a vacuum.

The filler, inside on the bedside, isn't even noticed- it just looks 'factory'.

The fella that did the work on 'Lemon Drop' [RocKrin?] posted a very detailed how-to that got this started, and was kind enough to help with a couple of emails.

This board is a terrific resource for those of us still workin' on our trucks.

Many Thanks to all!
