Power steering upgrade for 69' C20

I perused the existing posts looking for some advice on converting "Buford" to Power Steering.

Is there a specific year range that is compatible or do I need to track down new equipment for this project?

Any advice would be appreciated.

69 is an easy swap with the correct parts. Assuming you don't have a 6 cyl. Parts for either V8 specially a small block can be found in the parts section pretty quick

I'd look for a 1980's power steering set-up from a local junk yard or off ebay. You'll need the PS gearbox off a 3/4 or 1 ton- with the idler arm (that's a must) and you can pick up a rebuilt PS pump off the 81-88 chevy 1/2 ton rebuilt for under $40 along with PS hoses from ur local auto parts store. It all bolts on and it gives you CLOSE-RATIO power steering (which is awesome by the way). My whole set-up cost me less than a $150.00 +plus install (had my disc brakes/shocks/springs installed at the same time ).

Re: Power steering upgrade for 69' C20

I've located a PS steering box from an 89' Sub....what years(range) will "bolt on" correctly or with little modification?

Some of the wrecking yards in town want anywhere from $175 - $350 for the box/pump combo with the bracket.

Please advise...

Unhappy Re: Power steering upgrade for 69' C20

Came across a 70 C10 Fleetside Longbed with a TH350, 3.73 rear end w/ 6 lug wheels, AND PS pump and PS Box for $300(no motor of course...). All the parts I've been looking for to spruce up the 69 C20 Longbed Stepside are now in the driveway.

I now have a new dilemma, which truck do I keep? Both have some decay in key places and need lots o' love to get them back in the game....the 70 cab is in slightly better shape overall....any thoughts?

Since both vehicles are almost identical, does it matter if I take the best parts from both and make a 70 C10 Lonbed Stepside? I'm not too concerned with VIN accuracy and numbers at this point.

BTW...the running 350 in the 69 is actually from a 70....based on the date codes.

Just curious what most folks would do.....

Drive the one with the most rust issues while you remove the cab from the other and repair. Then swap. You can do the same with almost everything else too.Sure makes it easier to stay motivated on a project if you can drive it.
