84 power steering box?
I am putting a 1984 power steering box into my 71 C10. I have all the other parts for the power steering: pump, brackets, hoses etc from a 69 GMC for a big block that has the fluid resevior mounted on the passenger side fender. I have pre-assembled the hoses to the steering box and the fittings seem to fit OK, but I have read something about "O-Ring" hoses will only work in this 1984 model power steering box. Am I going to have leak problems if I use these hoses?

Re: 84 power steering box?
I have the '84 box on both my trucks. It uses an entirely different fitting. If you look down in the ports, you can see the older style is an angled flare and the newer style is an o-ring fitting. The o-ring style is just like an A/C line. They are NOT interchangeable- you will have leaks.
You will need the newer hose and fitting at the rear of the pump. The pump fitting is a 1" hex and is torqued in there very well, but it will come out. Conversely, you can get a hose built with the newer fitting on the box end and the older fitting on the pump end. You will still need the line for the low pressure side- I used a piece of old A/C hardline and clamped on 3/8" hose.

Re: 84 power steering box?
Actually you can use the '84 the same way I used my '85. OE lines with these inserts. Also some adapters available, but take up too much room.

Re: 84 power steering box?
One problem I ran into is the 1977 to 86 model steering box will have a 3/4" shaft, and the 68 to 76 has a 13/16" shaft. You will need the box side of a 77 to 86 rag joint if you use this box. It bolts up to the 69 column side of the rag joint.

Re: 84 power steering box?
Good call GB. I forgot about that. You will need the newer rag joint. The old pitman arm will work though...
