Re: Help please won't run
Start looking for the fusable link thats toast. I had several problems with the one at the starter due to heat issues. Might be a good place to start the search.

Re: Help please won't run
If the fusable link is fine then replace the battery. I had the same thing happen to me about 100ft from my house after trying out some new headers. Headers burned through the insulation on the positive cable to the starter and fried the battery. I replaced the battery and the cable the next day and everything worked fine.

Re: Help please won't run
You should only have one main wire running from your battery to your starter, then everything breaks off of there.

Re: Help please won't run
Shorting the big battery cable will create a lot of current through the big battery cables, and possibly fry them, or the battery...
What's the voltage measured accross the battery? If its around 12.5V, I'd be looking at a bad cable connection, or fried big battery cable. What's the voltage measured from the connector block on the fender near the battery to ground? I'm assuming there is a connector, but I haven't looked under the hood of a 73 in a lot of years. Re: Help please won't run
Ignition switch maybe? You may have fried the ignition switch, and even though you turn the key on, there's no power going through the switch to allow anything to come on. Time to get out a test light and multimeter and start testing things. Once you get to the ignition switch make sure it's got power to it using the test light. If it does, but the accessories don't have power once the switch is on, I would try replacing that.

Re: Help please won't run
should be a fuseable link mounted high on the firewall behind the distributor, did you check it?

Re: Help please won't run
So no lights or horn?
What makes you think the battery is good? What makes you think the "cable" is good? I guess you mean the big cable that got melted to the header? What about all the other cables you've been asked about? |

Also check the post on the fire wall. On my 90 burb it had intermittent connection there made it quite the pita to track down.

What makes you think the battery is good? Tested it What makes you think the "cable" is good? I guess you mean the big cable that got melted to the header? tested it to. volts is still going thur it and it only melted barely thru the cover What about all the other cables you've been asked about? test them. and i put a jumper wire to get pass the fuseable link. it is dead no volts going past the wire on the junction block on the fire wall. i got fire to ther and thats it

Re: Help please won't run
Assuming "nothing" means nothing, his headlights, horn, brake lights, etc. don't work. Since these don't need the ignition switch, its not likely the problem.
If he shorted the big starter cable to a header, the current is going back through the block through the ground cable to the battery. Thus, its probably not something on the low current side of things... |

Re: Help please won't run
My burb lost it in the wire- terminal on the firewall. check incoming and out going. it either has to be wire-terminal, or resistance between terminal and post.
