Questions About Axle Flip
Hey guy's,
I was surfin Ebay and ran across the below flip bracket kit, Starting bid is $40 and $11 shipping. States five inch drop and the same (stock) U bolts can be used. For you who have installed flip kits, Are the two up-rights (arrow) the same height ? I'm wondering about pinion angle/drive-line vibration ? Reason I ask is I'm a welder/fabricator and have the stock in my shop to build these, I have already fabbed up a set of 3" drop shackles. Call me cheap, But even if I was lucky enough to get them for opening bid that's $51 that can be spent else-where. Thanks for any input.....

Re: Questions About Axle Flip
If I'm remembering right, the legs are different lengths to correct the pinion angle (it only needs about 3 degrees) I'm not sure what that would equate to dimensionally. The location of the alignment hole is fairly critical, but you might could figure it out if you reversed the spring pack bolt (alignment pin) and did some careful measuring. If you could find someone with an uninstalled set they could supply dimensions for you. Just a thought...

Re: Questions About Axle Flip
I asked the seller about the length of these brackets and this is the reply I got;
"They are the same height and there will be no vibration". Does this sound feasible to you guys ?

Re: Questions About Axle Flip
I just bought a set of 3" springs and a flip kit from a guy locally that have never been mounted. He said he bought them from AME but I can't find a website for that name?
Anywhoo, both legs measure 3-5/8" (+/- 1/16"). They look EXACTLY like the ones you posted in the original post. The Ebay ad wasn't from the Seattle area was it...

Re: Questions About Axle Flip
I wouldn't worry about it, i've benn running a Flip Kit on my 83 for the last 24 yrs without any problems, the key is to make sure that the hole is mounted forward as was mentioned earlier, this will pull the yoke back out of the tranny as the rear is lowered.

Re: Questions About Axle Flip
the pinion angle is determined by the welded leaf spring pads.

Re: Questions About Axle Flip
I guess it probably doesn't matter as the springs look to be ground force?
Does anyone have any idea what the dimension of these springs should be? They are supposed to be 3" drop springs. I measure just over 10" in length and about 5-1/2" in diameter.

Re: Questions About Axle Flip
I don't know if this would be a big deal or not, but it seems to me like the brackets pictured above would be putting a lot more stress on the axle pad weld? Maybe not, but it seems like the axle trying to rotate would now be putting upward force on the weld, as opposed to downward force.

Re: Questions About Axle Flip
you are correct 7t2 lol i learned this the hard way also....was coming to a on ramp in my 72 right after i did my flip ohh 7-8 years ago...anyways i got on her pretty hard, and with 4,56 gears.and a 400 horse 350 you know it gets outa the whole fast....anyways the right side ear bent up and took me for a wild ride....was not fun.....anyways to solve this i baught two new ears(or spring pearches) and replaced those and on top i added a piece of 1/2 inch plate steel....has been doing great now with no problems i even ran a 4.88 gear and all was fine....i would suggest people to do this mod also....it could save someone from a bad bad wreck...........................just my 0.2
