Pulling My Hair Out!!! 350 Swap!!

When I started the swap I said I was going to keep this simple! I got the motor out of the van and see that it does not accept a regular fuel pump. At this point I am furious because I want this to be a very simple setup. I then walk over to my old truck motor and pull the pan off only to find it is a 4 bolt main. Since time is not a factor I have decided to build up my old block and just say the hell with the van engine. I am going to keep the 700r4 and go from there. I already have a set of heads, new camshaft, new oil pan, new pulleys, Engine gasket set. I am going to get up in the morning and remove the heads and break this motor down so I can have it ready for the shop on Wednesday.

I look at this as sign to go ahead and build what I want and stop trying to take shortcuts!

Someone once said "small jobs always take twice as long and cost 3 times as much as anticipated". I think they weren't far off... Good luck with your build.

Re: Pulling My Hair Out!!! 350 Swap!!

Every time I think it will be simple, I am in denial. Just like when I started out to do an engine swap. Now it has gotten to rebuilding of the frontend, doing a drop, removing the front clip, installing new rockers on & on & on!!! All I can say to you at this point is hold on for the ride

when I think a task is simple, I wind up spending more money on it if I just would have bought something out of the box!

Yes I have spent the whole night looking at different 350 builds. I know I want some 64cc heads so far...

Keep in mind about the compression ratio with the 64cc heads you want. Going too high compression, you'll have problems with todays pump gas.

Re: Pulling My Hair Out!!! 350 Swap!!

what year is the van motor? it still maybe the desirable one, run a cheap electric pump and regulator maybe $50 is all you'll spend in a little wire, line pump, regulator and fittings. If the van motor is a mid 90's it will have a roller cam, its a lot cheaper to have this block than retro a roller in a older block and you'll love the better performance, economy and throttle response of the roller over the flat tappet

An electric fuel pump install isn't all that big of a deal...certainly not when compared to an engine overhaul!

Re: Pulling My Hair Out!!! 350 Swap!!

I got to the point where I want things right and the only way to do that is build what I need for now. I broke down my 4 bolt main block today and have everything ready to go to the shop on the 2nd. I am going to use the Dart heads and work from there. I plan to hook up the 700r4 setup. I also plan to pull my axles and have machine shop convert them. Hopefully I can turn everything in less than 30 days... I have all the parts to do this so now I am going to make it happen. I have been putting my excess parts on ebay.

Re: Pulling My Hair Out!!! 350 Swap!!

Murphy's law will always prevail!
I started out with a "good" 400sb which turned out to be a timebomb.I got a nice little 355 built to replace it.In the meantime I bought a 80 1/2 hauler beater with a tired 305 as a parts getter.Turned out the 305 was way more tired than I originally thought. Now I have the 355 in the 80 (which is worth a third of what the engine is) and I've got a 454 slated for the 72.*sigh*

Re: Pulling My Hair Out!!! 350 Swap!!

Good luck with your build,as it sounds like your going in a decent direction with it. With flat top pistons and 64cc heads you will be 10.0-1 compression roughly which will require high octane fuel at least. 4 bolt mains are desirable but dont give away 2 bolts as they make great engines also.

Other then a late model 5.3---I love the 350---010 blocks with vortec heads and a mild cam---really hard to beat===just ask any dirt track racer who beats them to death. Easy, cheap hp and torque with great reliability~~~. My .02

Re: Pulling My Hair Out!!! 350 Swap!!

I agree with you about the 350s. In my case AI just want a simple setup to put back in my truck. After talking to my friend in AZ I came to realize that rebuild the stock block is not a bad option. I really wanted to get the truck up and running pretty quick but a fresh rebuild will take me longer down the road and it can be done in a timely manner. The Van motor would work but I have no real history on the motor...
