Welcome Back Cotter
I'm guessing that I'm not the first person to run into somehting like this --
I'm thinking angle grinder but thought I would check for less radical solutions first. lol (note my all but non-existant photoshop skills where I added the little arrow.)

Re: Welcome Back Cotter
whats the problem, can't get the cotter pin out?
If you have a decent impact and compressor at hand, then just cut/break off what you can, then zip it off with the impact. |

Re: Welcome Back Cotter
I don't have any air.. just hand tools.
That's the bottom ball joint so I don't think you could get on it with an impact anyway. :P

Re: Welcome Back Cotter
Do what Andy is saying without an impact. Break the rest of the pin off and back the nut off. If worse-comes-to-worse use a big breaker bar with a pipe on it.

Re: Welcome Back Cotter
Just drive a socket on it and turn out and then you can get the cotter pin out.

Re: Welcome Back Cotter
Be sure to leave a jack under the lower control arm to keep tension on the spring and avoid possible injury in case the lCA separates from the steering knuckle.

Re: Welcome Back Cotter
i realize that its a little to late now, but for future reference,
if you keep the thing wet with penetrating oil for a day or so, and use a 3/32" pin punch, you can tap those things out pretty easy.

Re: Welcome Back Cotter
I did have a jack under there.. but it turns out that it wasn't needed.. I never could get the ball joints off.. which is ok since I am only saving the springs. Everything else is getting updated to '83 parts.

Re: Welcome Back Cotter
I've had a fw cotterpins break off inside the nut with a few fragments sticking out. i just hammered a socket on there past whatever was left & put my long rachet on it & gave it a pull & the nut spun off & just cut off the remainder of the pin.

Re: Welcome Back Cotter
Why did you go through all that work just to save the springs? Why not just use the '83 springs with the swap?

Re: Welcome Back Cotter
Because I don't have the new springs.. I'm getting spindles, calipers, control arms, rotors, a booster, master cylinder, propertioning valve and a big dirty card board box. All being brought back from Indy when my wife passes through there on her way home from Oklahoma City.
I would have to pull the old control arms off any way you look at it. ![]()
