steering box lube
I have a manual steering box out of the truck I am cleaning up to paint. What kind of lube goes in this? The service manual says "water resistant EP Chassis Grease." Is this just regular grease you would put in suspension parts?
I also noticed as I turn the input shaft with my hand, it turns smoothly until you get to one "end" of the full cycle and then you can kind of feel it "grabing," and doesn't turn as smooth. Is this anything to worry about? Maybe the adjusting screw needs to be turned? |

Re: steering box lube
If it says "chassis", then I would use the same grease that you'd lubricate your chassis with.
As for your second question, I'd wait until it is lubricated, then repeat the test you made. If greasing the box doesn't solve your delimna, then you'd have to delve further into the issue. I'm gonna hazard a guess that it needs lubricated, and that is why it's puzzling to you.

Re: steering box lube
EP is extreme pressure. As far as the water resistant I would think most all are. NAPA has some extreme pressure wheel bearing grease. How do you fill it does it have a zerk. I don't know but if I was to guess I would have thought it would have taken gear oil.
I think most gear boxes "load up" at the end of their travel. Last edited by airdale94; 01-05-2008 at 11:57 AM. Reason: add |
