Best Drop Shock?

I need a set of shocks for a 5/7" drop and am trying to decide between the following:

1. Toxic
2. Edelbrock IAS
3. DJM Cal Max
4. Bell Tech Nitro Active
5. Doetsch
6. KYB
7. Bilstein
8. Koni
9. Other

If you chose "other" - please let me know which shock you've had success with.

Re: Best Drop Shock?

My dad went with KYB GR-2's for a soft ride. I went with KYB Gas Adjust's for a firmer ride and more control. I love them!

Re: Best Drop Shock?

BellTech hands down. I have tried several brands on my '70 stepside with a 4.5-7 Early Classic drop, and I will never use anything else. Ride quality and handling are outstanding. Hope this helps.

Re: Best Drop Shock?

Im sitting on the DJM CalMAx shocks,,,, Dont really know if I like them. I just feel that there might be a better shock out there, Ive heard killer things about Bell Tech Nitro Active & Doetsch's.
When ever I get extra cash Ill change to one of those.

Re: Best Drop Shock?

I run Toxic Shocks on my '93 but I can't really tell much as they don't have a whole lot of miles on them yet. They do seem sorta stiff. Next set, I may go for Bilsteins. They are a proven shock and have never heard anything negative about them.

Re: Best Drop Shock?

I took brand new Toxic shocks off my old '99 (4/6 drop) and installed Doetsch. No comparison. I wouldn't use Toxic shocks if they were free. Plus you usually have to assemble some part of them. (lower mount). Otherwise I use Belltech. My blazer has KYB's from ECE. Nice shock,... but you can get them cheaper locally at the parts stores.

Re: Best Drop Shock?

I've always heard Toxic's are junk. Never used them before to verify.

Re: Best Drop Shock?

Unfortunately, this question is similar to "how big is a hole?" Well... it depends.

For my '69 Wallet Eater, which doesn't carry much more than my fat self, and rolls down reasonable roads at reasonable speeds, I've been quite satisfied with Monroe/Gabriel stockers. However, for my 2 door 2WD Tahoe, that has tons of glass and crap up high (such that it corners like a station wagon), I moved the stock mounts (and a lot of other things) and installed Rancho RS9000x series with the adjusters turned all the way up. Fronts on the 'Ho are DT's (replaced Toxics, which were lacking).

Thank you for the "other" explanation. This certainly helps with my decision. I was very close to pulling the trigger on a set of Toxics last week, which seem to be complete garbage from this thread... Very helpful.

Thank you everyone!
