what is the most likely tranny and transfer case in a 83 2500 4x4 with 4 speed stick

The trans is a sm465 and I am guessing the t-case is a np205.
The np208 t- case was in the 1/2 ton trucks.
The np205 is cast iron and the np208 is aluminium.

465-208 I own an 83 1/2 ton and this is what is in it. not bad though. Its not as strong as the 205 but it has a lower-low range gear then the 205.

2-1 in the 205 and 2.6 or 2.8-1 in the 208 (i dont remember)

the guy i bought it from said it has the higher gear ratio

heres my next question can i remove the tailstock of a 2wd transmission and attach the t-case to the tranny or are 4wd different than 2wd trannys

The output shafts in the trannys are different 4WD vs. 2WD.

I don`t know what trans you want,but get a 4wd version or a complete t-case/trans combo if you`re changing t-cases,too.
