Red face hi, I found a motor and need to know how much it's worth...

hi, i went to an old family friend's house the other day and saw that he had a completely original motor setting under a bay of a shop and i asked him what it came out of: he said it is a motor (no idea what size) out of a 1948 chevy truck. he also has all the origional running gear for it like the rear end, trans. and all that, he said that if i wanted it or had any need for it to take it, i was just wondering how much something like that was worth. everything seems to be in order with it.

any info would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

colby

It depends on what you want to do with it.

1-ton of fun: it is an inline six and looks like it would run with a little tinkering.

solidaxel: what do you mean by "it depends on what you want to do with it."?

If it is just a engine, not the whole truck, what or where would you use it, what would you do with it? Do you have a truck or car that you want to put it into. Sometimes gifts have a very large completion price!!!

Re: hi, ran across a moter and wondered how much it was worth...

If its an old 216 they are not really worth to much unless you need one. You can do some research on the web. The earlier motors did not have a pressurized oiling system. They were just splash oilers like lawn mowers. The 235 is the way to go for the earlier trucks.

I dont really have a use for it, thats why i needed to know how much it was worth in case i got it and wanted to sell it. I figured if nothing else i could just practice rebuilding it. I'm not a mechanic by any means, but i figured it would broaden my knowlege a little bit if I started tinkering with it.

Re: hi, ran across a moter and wondered how much it was worth...

If your interest is to learn how too, start with a air cooled single cylinder, remaov every part and replace every part with nothing left over!! Look for a Wisconsen, Kohler, or even a Briggs and Stratton, stay away from Honda or Kawalski 4 Cycle, parts are too expensive.
The 216c.i. will be just about the same except it will have 6 cylinders instead of one, it will be easier to move around and have the same parts TIMES 6!!!
iT WILL BE AIR COOLED INSTEAD OF WATER COOLED which will make it lighter and if you want to start it you will need the same components, spark- fule- air- compression.
Like stated the old 216 is a good boat anchor unless yours is is in many parts and you are on the side of the road, the value is what someone else will give you for it.
