Fuel pump questions - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I was looking into intank fuel pumps for my gas tank that i am building. I don't know alot about fuel pumps and had a few questions. First one is I am looking for an intank pump that will be pump enough gas to my LS1 motor. I will hopefully have around 600hp after all the mods. What GPH do i need? Also what is an evaporator? I went down to kragens to look at a few different fuel pumps and i noticed two plugs on top of most of the fuel pumps. The sending unit and pump is all in one. The guy at kragens told me that the other plug is for an evaporative system. I felt stupid. Is it relative to smog requirements? Do you recommend any specific fuel pumps? I want to find the pump i need then build my tanks depth accordingly. Thanks for the help and any comments are appreciated.

You should have a feed line and a return line. I can't tell from that picture, but you might have a third on that one (which would be for the evap system).

All the evap system does is control the vapors from the evaporating fuel in the tank.

What year is the engine out of and vehicle? Does the fuel rail have 2 lines coming out or just 1?

Edit: Actually reading that first one, it says its a vent. So it would just go up to the filler neck and enter there so the gas would flow in nicely.

Thanks for the info on the evap system. I was hoping someone had some insite on what fuel pump i should use or what i need to look for in the fuel pump.

The newer vehicles have a way to filter the fumes and send them on to the fuel system. Block off the evap line and run a breathing gas cap. Don't try to pass any Emissions tests though. That hose was going to the charcol cannister and it would suck the fumes into intake when computer told it to by means of a purge valve according to EPA regs. With the high pressure demand of the newer fuel injected system you gotta have the return line but don't need the evap line to make it run.
Added-- I would check to see if the LS1 needs more than 40 psi to run. I think it may be higher and if so that pump wont work. Check into fuel psi for that fuel induction system before purchasing.

Seems to me (just off the top of my head), port injection motors need 50-60 psi fuel pressure. I believe 130 GPH pump will support 600 hp. Just make sure you size the lines correctly and any filters will flow enough as well.

Do you think 3/8 lines for supply and return is sufficient? I havn't seen any pumps that will do 130gph. The highest i have seen are around 80-90gph. Thanks for the help guys!!!

I would probably go to a 1/2" fuel line for that hp level and the return can stay 3/8".
