Turbo 400 rattles?

What would make a turbo 400 rattle at a stop light, but fine going down the road, fine in park and neutral? It doesn't really bother me because you can't hear it outside cause of the exhaust but I was wondering if I need to take care of this before it becomes a bigger problem. Thanks in advance, Michael.

Have you checked the flywheel cover to make sure it is secure? I ask this because I had the same problem and mine was loose.

Re: Turbo 400 rattles?

Long time ago my brother had a noisy transmission. He found the flex plate/flywheel was cracked.

Check all the mounting bolts for any of them being loose or for any cracks.

Have it checked out. If your tranny goes you are stuck.

Re: Turbo 400 rattles?

if it was the flywheel it would make the noise in park or N, only making the noise in drive says to me something to do with it vibrating. maybe the exhaust or something near the tranny vibrating on it that sounds like its coming from it?

Not necessarily. Remember that a slight amout of torque is applied when stopped in gear (less road and exhaust noise makes it more noticeable), more torque as you apply power (pressure on loose bolts could diminish play), and no torque when in neutral or park.

Select, aside from that possibility, what engine do you have. Mine has a rattle when in idle coming from the heat riser on my 6 cylinder. But any loose metal can cause, this especially in idle if the engine has a rough idle. Most engines smooth out at higher speeds.
