Re: Crewcab build

You might also play with some different types of hinges, some that would swing the door out and back while it opens, they just might not fit on the narrow middle hinge pillar...
suicides might be the easiest solution.

Think how cool it would look with this beast laying on the ground, and both doors open with only a litle B-pillar in the middle!

Re: Crewcab build

Hey Rob....on my 06 F-350 the rear doors (extra-cab, suicide rear doors) open outward away from the truck.....What about using these style hinges ??

The door actually pulls away a pretty good amount...

Actually, these are just the same style hinges as the OG black crew, just behind the skin of the truck. So mabey they wont work.

If you set the hinges just behind the door skin, would you have enough throw to get that sucker away from the truck ??

Check it out...

Re: Crewcab build

Do you guys love making more work for me?
I'm really kicking myself for not grabbing a set of hinges from a lincon continental at the junkyard a few weeks ago! If I go the suicide route, the pillar between the doors can disappear, and I just have to work the latching mechanism them. Hmm, this might be less work total then trying to get the doors to work normally. I'm off to the shop soon, I'll snag my girlfriends camera to take good pictures today!

Re: Crewcab build

Nice! Thanks for the pictures, it makes it so much easier to know what someone is talking about when you can see it. I'm going to my old car research area(pick n pull) before I go to the shop, to see if I can get some hinge ideas, and possibly snag some conti hinges.

Re: Crewcab build

So the next step is going to be to suicide the rear door hinges. I'm going to attempt to do this with the stock hinges, and remove the whole post that they attach to on the front of the cab. If that doesn't work, I'm going to have to look around for some nice suicide hinges, but I think it will. One the rear door is in and cut down, I can fit the 2 cabs together, check allignment, and start on re andgleing the front doors.

Re: Crewcab build

You're not wasting any time on this one! Lovin' all the cool pics.
So, you decided on the suicide doors. That's gonna be sweet. I do have a question, though. For the latch assembly, are you going to use the B pillar/latch setup as the front of the rear set of doors so that the front door will overlap slightly and be seamless?(not sure if this ? makes sense/is worded properly) Just wondering on the exact plan of attack.

I decided to go seamless between the doors, and suicide hinges are the only internal hinge that would allow this. The doors are going edge to edge, and the back top of the front door edge will be re-angled to match that of the rear door. I'm going to switch the doors hinge/latch from end to end, and hopefully be able to retain all of the original parts. I think I know what you are saying, I'm actaully going a to have a pillar between the doors, but just not visable form the exterior.

Re: Crewcab build

OK, that makes sense. I thought you were going to set it up without a center pillar similar to the late model extended cabs and I was just trying to envision how that would work exactly. Thanks for the clarification and I will be looking forward to your updates/progress reports. Good luck on the build!!

Re: Crewcab build

Are you going to keep the step up in the roof from the first cab all the way back or cut it out and just step up at the back cab??? Just curious. Jerry

This whole pillarless thing is killing me, I now see why they have one the conversions. It's going to be very slick when it's done, but this is causing me a major headache! I'll bring the camera along tomorrow, and post some pictures later in the afternoon.
