I bought a front end rebuild kit from ECE. I'm getting ready to install the lower ball joint but the gap between the "shaft" and the dust boot looks to big. Is it suppose to be like this?

I think that looks right. I believe there is a bit of swivel that's built in....

how's the ece kit? like it??

Thanks for the reply. The ECE kit is the most complete one I could find. Its all MOOG, so it's quality. I tried to piece a similar kit to see if I could save money, but it always added up to more. It cost a little over $500 but I know its worth it.

Also when to boot is compressed when the spindle is installed the gap will close a little.

that is correct because that part of the ball joint shaft is tapered

I used an ECE kit as well a few years ago to rebuild my suspension. Yes, that's normal. Once you press that into your spindle the boot will compress and allow grease to stay in the joint.

The only thing they did to me was give me the wrong boots for the control arm to cross member bars. The tops are smaller than the bottoms and they gave boots that were all the same.

I replaced everything except the actual control arms and the drag link. Everything else came from them. It cost me over $800, but it was super worth it. They're a good company to work with too. You'll be happy once everything is bolted together, greased and your front-end is aligned.
