Winch! Deal or Waste?

What you guys think?
Most parts are available aftermarket, no power out, and I'd have to fab cable controls.
I was excited at first, but now less so.

It is only a few miles away.
I can't think of an elegant way to mount it to any of my trucks.

Re: Winch! Deal or Waste?

Maybe a reciever hitch in the rear??? Not a bad price if you can get the things that go with it.

Re: Winch! Deal or Waste?

That's the precurser to the warn 8274. While it may be rated at 6k, it's a strong winch and making up a control pack isn't all that hard.

All you would need for solenoids is constant duty rated starter solenoids. They are as close as your local AC Delco parts house. Check this out for rebuild/wiring tech:

http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billav...274/index.html

It's on the 8274, but a lot will carry over to the earlier model. Warn probably has the capability of crossing parts to see what's compatible too.

For $140 it's a steal.

Re: Winch! Deal or Waste?

Thats what I have with a receiver mount. Not the best looking set up, but I like it. We added a welded steel box over the electric motor after some one stole the original. No power-out kinda sucks but its nice to be able to move it to the rear receiver when needed.

Re: Winch! Deal or Waste?

I'm a big sucker.
It worked so smooth I forgot to haggle over the price.
A little oil seems to be seeping from the case halves, maybe I will pop the end off an put some goo there.
Its mounted to a big angle Iron, I'll probably just stick some receiver tube to the bottom and call it done.
Are you using the control cables?

Nope. We just made our own control cable out of an old 4-prong round trailer plug. You can see the female plug on the side of the winch motor cage.

Re: Winch! Deal or Waste?

Mine only needs one wire for electrical control, a 'pull' button.
Winch engage is cable operated.
Load brake is run my another cable.
I think I could do OK at the bicycle shop

Is that how your setup is?
