How hard?
I have a 1970 chevy k10. It has a small block in it now and this is going to be my project truck. My question is i am going to be aquiring a 5.9l cummins turbo diesel with automatic transmission and all computer/wiring. How hard is to get this motor and trans to fit into my truck? Any input would be helpful. Thanks!

Depends, if you can make it fit your next problem and most likely the hardest to fix is the computer, most computers now days have VAT program in them (vehical anti theft) and you will have to find someone to program that out. and that could = big $

Get A 12 Valve Cummins No Computer At All.there Is Tons Of Info On The Net On This Conversion.

468 is right u need a 94-97 12valve because the lift pump, ingition and most stuff like that are mechanicaly controled unlike a 24valve with has a full harness. other than that you will prolly need a front end cause of the extra weight. have fun and pm if u have questions

I am going to be getting the whole truck (truck is totaled). I am pretty sure its a 98-00, around that year. So even if i have the whole truck i am still going to run into the VAT problem? Thanks apreciate the help.

i would think as long as u have the chip/key that goes in the VAT port in the cab u shoul be good. i dont know if 2nd gen dodges have that, 3rd gens do.

I saw on Extreme 4x4 that they put a '99-'05 turbo diesel engine into a Suzuki Sidekick or Samurai or something. All they needed was a harness that had been whittled of unnecessary wires and adapted to run the engine in a "Standalone" manner. I don't recall if they retained the computer.
The point is, any engine (computer-driven or not) can be run in any vehicle if you have a properly modified or created harness. It's just a matter of getting that harness, wiring it properly to power, bolting the engine/tranny combo between the framerails, and creating a driveshaft that will connect the output shaft of the tranny to the input shaft of the gearbox on the rear axle (or front axle also, if it's 4wd) Some people opt to stick with the stock tranny, in which case you need to figure out how to mate the new engine to your tranny, which IMO, it's easier just to use the tranny the new engine was made for and use a modified driveshaft (just my opinion). Find someone who makes (or creates) a harness, and go from there. I didn't think there was a 'modern' (less than 10yrs old) Deisel engine on the face of the earth that ran on a 'points' or 'hei' system, but I'm probably very, very wrong on that.

Give some thought to just yanking your K10's body and making adjustments to body mounts to put it on the donor vehicle. That is of course, assuming the donor's frame is still useable.

I think this has been adressed on the board before.... you might try a search in the 67-72 board to see. I would love to see a Cummins in one of our trucks though, good luck!

it has been done ive seen it, you can also put duramax's in them. and no diesels dont have spark plugs so no need for HEI or Points

you do still need power for the injectors, and some semblance of timing on the injectors, though, or you're not gonna have any combustion at all.

I apreciate all the help guys. The frame is shot or else i would of done what yukon said. Hopefully i end up getting this truck to use for my k10 build. I found a k20 tonight while i was out and it is in very good shape. I am going to see about that tomorow and keep my k10 for parts. The k10 body is in rough shape comared to the k20.
