HEI distributer
I have a 1980 GMC 6 automatic and I am wondering if my original distributer is a HEI ignition. I would like to improve the way this GMC runs, as it sputters when cold and doesn't give very good gas mileage. It seems, that if I can upgrade the ignition maybe it would run better. Marvxyz1

Is The Coil In The Distributor Cap?? If So Its A Hei(if Its A Stock 80 Model It Probably Is)

HEI started on these truck in 1975, and 80 should definitely have one. Putting points in one is like putting a hand crank on the crankshaft.

prolly if left alone original its a HEI but are you sure the problem is in the ignition and not the carb

Check the choke. I bet it is opening too fast for a cold carb. I adjust my carb twice a year. Summer and winter. I adjust the choke so it stays closed longer during the winter.
