I have a bunch of 3 and 4 speed saginaws and want to sort them out .
Also i need to now what plastic speed o drive gears[in the tail shaft] to use with a 411 or 340 rear gears to make the speedo read right?

Re: standard questions?

What kind of trannys are you referring to? truck or car? Rings???
You also need to state tire size to get a response on the gearing question.

0 Teeth= 1st - 2.85 2nd2 - 2.02 3rd- 1.35 4th - 1.00
1 Teeth= 1st - 2.56 2nd2 - 1.81 3rd- 1.37 4th - 1.00 (3rd has 24 teeth)
1 Teeth= 1st - 2.56 2nd2 - 1.81 3rd- 1.44 4th - 1.00 (3rd has 21 teeth)
2 Teeth= 1st - 3.11 2nd2 - 2.20 3rd- 1.47 4th - 1.00
3 Teeth= 1st - 3.50 2nd2 - 2.48 3rd- 1.65 4th - 1.00

As far as which Saginaw is the desirable one, My opinion is none of them. If you want a factory trans for putting behind a strong SBC, get a Muncie (they are OLD) or a BW T10.

Re: standard questions?

A883OD is a possible option, they were put in some of the mid 80s trucks, and are also found behind Hemi 440 engines in Dodge cars.

Personally I am going with an NV4500

That isn't a correct statement. The Over drive A883 (RPO code MY6) was NEVER used behind a 440. Your confusing it with the original A883 which ceased production in 1975 when the A883 (OD) replaced it. It was only used on 75-79 overdrive Chrysler A and F bodies, 1976-87 Dodge trucks, and 1981-86 General Motors trucks, and not very popular.

These are not know for their strength. The aluminum cases are weak and known to explode under high loads. Unlike a normal 4 speed that has a 1:1 ratio, and the input and output are locked together, the OD trans uses the counter shaft as the final drive so everything has power applied to it. Power comes in on the input transfers to the countershaft and returns to the output.

Re: standard questions?

Ah, cool! I just searched for A883 and thats what I found. My buddy has one in his 1/2 ton 4x4, and its held up to a ton of abuse from him, so it seemed to make sense to me
