sm465 swap to a nv4500

How expensive is this? Does it really require a new bell housing? I would like to have a overdrive in my 72 k5. If to much ill just pull the 465 and freshen it up. Thanks!!!

Re: sm465 swap to a nv4500

from around 2500 to 3500 depending on were you get the parts. 1500 for trans and bell housing 500 for the round blt patern np205 or I think 800 for the advance adaptor kit to add it to a fiure 8 style then 250 for the hydrolic cluch kit then im guessing 150 for the cluch. you could aways use a 208 transfer case from a m1008 if you dont mind not using the np205 to save some cash.
Bell housing some poeple have trouble with the pasenger side clutch fork and cylinder geting in the way oof the drive line some dont if you dont have a lot of lift it may get in the way of the front drive shaft so you would need the advance adaptors bell with driver side cluch fork.

Check out Advance Adapter's Ranger Overdrive. It bolts between the stock bellhousing and the tranny itself, and is a bit cheaper.

Re: sm465 swap to a nv4500

i used an AA bellhousing that allowed me to use my mechanical clutch, and i purchased a custom TC casing that bolted directly to the NV4500 tailhousing which eliminated both the need for an adapter as well a female coupler. i've read responses from others how time consuming and arguous setting up a custom hydraulic clutch can be, and i'm sure they have there benefits, however i haven't had any problems with my mechanical set up and it was pretty straight forward. just bolting on an overdrive unit would probably be cheaper over a 5 speed swap, but the NV4500's sychronized gears, spacing and OD over the SM465 are worth the extra $$ imo.

It might be worth checking into a gear vendor overdrive.

Re: sm465 swap to a nv4500

I put a NV4500 in my truck. couple of things to look for.

Get a NV for a chevy not dodge.
the early NV's had a lower first gear, but problems with 4th or 5th gear.
You can use a chevy bellhousing made for the NV but the throwout fork is on the pass side and can hit the front driveshaft. And I believe it needs a round 205 to bolt up.
Your stock clutch should work 1-1/8" 10 spline.
Hyd clutch is easy $30 from the bone yard.
If your going to use a figure 8 205 you to have/find one with the big bearing input shaft (32 spline female) I know one set up for a th400 will work.
You'll also need to remount the 205 shifter. AA makes the mount.
Depending on your rig you might need driveshaft work.

Price of a NV4500 $1,500
Bellhousing & hardware $1,000
Driveshaft & misc. $1,000

clicking into 5th on the highway and watching the tech drop to below 3, grand

PRICELESS!!
