67-68 Front Grill Trim Question

Found a local guy who has a few 67-68 grills for sale - he says he has one that has steel trim and one that has aluminum trim...

Did they make two types of grill trim or is this guy off his rocker?

I can't tell which is which from the pix...

Yes in 67/68 there are two different grille trims.. one is aluminum and the other is steel of which is painted. If I had to guess the bottom one in your picture is the aluminum one.

I like the steel ones better to powdercoat or to chrome.

I'm going to take the position that the steel grille trim rings were '67 only. In '68 they went to aluminum. OEM Replacement trim rings from the dealer were in aluminum-only for both model years. Since they are physically identical, either will fit. A '67 owner might have replaced his grille rings with aluminum, if that's all he could get. Or a '68 owner might have replaced the aluminum with steel ones because he liked the looks better -- painted or chromed. But I could be wrong.

This original '67 has painted steel grill trim. It's a no option six cyl. truck.

If I had an extra $4500 I would buy it....

Re: 67-68 Front Grill Trim Question

I have steel on mine, painted white from the factory.

When I was looking at prices for the repos in aluminum I decided to paint them in krylon chrome paint. Turned out OK, bt a trip to the chrome shop would be the way to go.

Re: 67-68 Front Grill Trim Question

Wonder how much it would cost to have steel ones chromed? I agree they would look much better than the aluminum rings.

You got me, but getting anything chromed in modern times is $$$, so in cost retrospect it would be cheaper to buy repops.

Chrome would be a better choice though for a longer lasting finish.
