Ive Got A Problem
Hello, I Just Recently Bought A 67 C10 As Some Of You Probably Know From The Newbie Board. This Truck Is A Really Good Solid Project But To My Bad Luck That Normally Happens To Me, I Found This Truck Has The Vin Plate Taken Off Of The Drivers Side Door Jam From When This Thing Was Stolen From The Previous Owner. I Have A Title That I Know Is For This Truck And I Found The Protect-o-plate In The Glove Box Today As Well. Should Have Looked It Over Better When I Was Looking At It To Buy. What Can I Do About That Vin Plate Missing? I Hate Like Crap To Completely Give Up On This Truck Because It Is Really Clean And Solid. Here Are Pics For Those Who Havent Seen It In The Newbie Forum. Thanks For The Help Guys.

Re: Ive Got A Problem
Does your state require a vin verification? I know in Florida they dont require it if the truck was previously registered in the state. If it dont require vin verification I dont see a problem

Re: Ive Got A Problem
wow quick replies, well if i understand vin verification properly, the state doesnt because its registered under the previous owners name. second, i bought it from a private party, not a salvage yard. i thought about trying to find another 67 but didnt really want to do that considering switching vins is illegal. but then again, the way this truck sits might be just as illegal too. im sure i could go to my dmv tomorrow and just put the title in my name because its not salvage or anything. just wanted to have a vin plate for it so it would be legit. i dont really want to ask the dmv people either because that might throw a red flag up and then the truck wouldnt be any good. i hate buying things on impulse.

Re: Ive Got A Problem
Look for the Vin number by the steering box on the driver's frame rail. I'm not sure if you need to remove the inner fender but it there. Search the forum for it's location. You'll probably need a wire brush and some degreaser but it should be there. It's also one one of the rear frame rails, under the bed, I think. Good luck.

Re: Ive Got A Problem
I would call the DMV. If you title it, and it is discovered by the police later, (normal trafic stop, inspection station, WHAT EVER reason) it could be BIG trouble.
If the VIN on the title matches the SPID in the glove box (protectoplate booklet doesn't mean jack... it's just a book) and the same numbers are found on the frame rail in this location; (photo courtosy off my old POS GMC/1500) Then they should be able to work with you. You may want to visit the seller, and have them sign a sworn (and notorized) afidavid stating they sold it to you like this and it is not stollen. It would suck to think you pulled the wool over there eyes, only to have them take your truck later on down the road and maybe even worse. |

Re: Ive Got A Problem
i was told when i bought this truck that the police had already dealt with this vehicle and thats why the title is clear. but like you just said longhorn, it would really suck to fix it up and they take it later on down the road.

Re: Ive Got A Problem
i agree now is the time to get it straightened out while the seller is still available to you and B4 any more money is tied up in this project// trying to slip one by the dmv is at most a short term solution that can result in time served or money spent lost completely with an impounded illegel vehicle

Re: Ive Got A Problem
I'd still go to the state and have them make you a plate, or tell you what you need to do.
