Red face I can't find these zert fittings

My clutch has been chattering for some time now when I start to take off and I need to grease it, but I can't find the zert fittings. Anyone?

Maybe I'm missing somthing... I didn't know clutches had a zerk fitting. Or is someone pulling my leg??

The ones I've had that chattered were alway contaminated somehow. The flywheel/clutch/clutch plate was burned, cracked, oil impregnated, etc...

Re: I can't find these zert fittings

I'm with you. I understand a chattering clutch, but there ain't no grease that's gonna do you any good. In fact, last time I checked, getting grease on a clutch was pretty much the end of that clutch.

Now, if it's the clutch Z-arm that needs grease, that's different. But I don't think that would be a source of clutch chatter.

Reminds me of my first car. The throwout bearing was going bad, fast. But, here it was time to go deer hunting on New Years Day, 1965. As we got ready to leave for home, it became obvious it was gonna be difficult. An older man suggested putting "something" between the arm of the clutch release bearing and the rod that actuated it when you pushed the clutch. Made sense to a couple of 17-yr old boys. So, we found a fitting for a gas (natural/propane), a bushing if you will, and inserted it between points A and B. Pushing on the clutch pedal made seemed to be better the first couple of times......until the arm broke off of the fulcrum inside the bell housing. Now, I was 100 miles from home, and no clutch action. Start it in gear, and shift it "carefully". I was almost home when I ran into a couple more buddies, who pulled my car to their house...still 15 miles from mine.

Next day, Dad and I went to get my car. It was raining....a lot. Where my car was parked, there was mud....a lot. Starting the car in a cold rain was not my best trait, especially with no clutch. Jacked up the right rear wheel, put it in gear and cranked it over. It started and Dad gave me a shove, off of the jack. Up the driveway/road I went until I got to the end of it, which was uphill, and onto a state highway and I couldn't see anything over the front of the hood, which was pointing up into the air as I approached the highway. I never slowed down as I hit the pavement. It's a good thing nobody was coming. I could have hit someone head-on, or been rear-ended.

Anyway, I took it to a guy who lived nearby and did "shade tree" mechanic work. He pulled the tranny, and the bell housing, drilled out the broken parts and re-installed the fork and fulcrum with new hardware. Five weeks later, I got rear-ended, and knocked into another car, and my car was essentially totaled.

Don't grease the clutch, though.

What a bummer... I bet your dad wasn't too happy about you totalling it after all that work to get you home.

Oh, my bad.

Actually, this post stemmed from a conversation I had with a moron here at work who doesn't understand the concept of friction. Not exactly this scenerio, but it made me think about greasing the clutch and or brakes..

Now back to reality..

Re: I can't find these zert fittings

The top and bottom ball joints on the a-arms as well as a couple on the steering linkage. Prolly more, but I can't think of them right now.

But none for the clutch..

Re: I can't find these zert fittings

in big trucks, you have to lube the throw out bearing, but not light dutys.
