Re: de-chroming bumpers
Wire wheel won't even touch the chrome, it's much too hard
Now a grinder with a flap wheel, that should get you a surface that is coarse enough to hold paint |

Re: de-chroming bumpers
i agree with spraybomb. The chrome is way to hard. I had my bumper sandblasted so i can paint it and it still didnt touch the chrome it just dulled it down

Re: de-chroming bumpers
I believe you have to have the bumper acid dipped to remove the chrome..

Re: de-chroming bumpers
I recently had some stepside gravel guards de-chromed and it had to be done at a chrome shop. But, when I got them back they looked like new metal! I believe they did acid dip them.

Re: de-chroming bumpers
its the same process as chroming them /they just reverse the polarity of the current

I'd ask around to see if anyone may want to trade. A lot of old trucks (mine) came without chrome bumpers. I like the painted look (mine again) but it's a lot harder to maintain nick and scratch free. However, they're easier to repair/touch up... |

Re: de-chroming bumpers
I'll trade ya. It's a 69 and I believe yours is a 72 but you could just cut some holes for your turn signals and your good to go. Course I can understand if you don't wanna mess with it. Just let me know. I'd love to go chrome.

Re: de-chroming bumpers
Steven, I have a painted front bumper you can have but if you want to remove the chrome from yours take them to the place on Mt. Vernon.

Re: de-chroming bumpers
thanks for the help guys
its very pitted and rusted and its a little bent up on the bottom in a couple spots by the frame rails and theres a crack in the bottom hole on the left side, plus i like the bare metal and was goin to clear it so i dont have to oil it all the time and the grinding wheel works fastom - thanks, i appreciate it, but the only thing i have to drive is my truck and its not done yet

Re: de-chroming bumpers
Go to the hardware store and purchase some muratic acid (like what they use to clean brick with) and mix it in a strong solution. That should pull the chrome finsih off and leave the zinc coat.
