I'm sure someone else has had this happen

I was driving my truck in the rain today and noticed it is dripping water on the floor. It is dripping from both drivers and pasengers side from under the dash. I have a new windshield and gasket installed.

So where is it coming from?

could be the windshield// could be the sealer in the rain gutters is dried out // could be your cowl vent seal not sealing

Re: I'm sure someone else has had this happen

Check the wiring gutter that runs along the top of the firewall in the engine compartment. It's a common area for rust because of debris that gets caught in the 'channel' holds moisture.

If that looks good, verify that the windsheild seals are sealing properly. Use a flashlight inside the cab under the dash & look while someone sprays all around the cab area.

Another common area for rust is the vent doors in the kick-panels.

I was thinking, when water goes in the cowl vents. Where is it supposed to drain? the truck doesnt have any rust to speak of and I want to keep it that way.

Same here. My leaks didn't start until I had the windshield replaced. I had found that the water is coming in through the gaskets at the lower corners.
The older gasket is not as pliable, thus not conforming to the shape as well.
I should have opted for the new gasket!

Re: I'm sure someone else has had this happen

If the drains for the cowl vents are clogged you might get water thru them.It is unlikely you would have it dripping from the dash though. It would most likely run down the kick panels. It is possible for it to dripto the top of the vent doors and that might look like it was coming from the dash.Best bet is to take a buddy to the car wash.Climb in upside down with a flash light and have him spray away. You should be able to locate exactly where it's coming in.Other than that i would check the weather seals at the top of the door.It might come in and run onto the dash and drip. Also the seals for various things on the firewall could cause it.

Re: I'm sure someone else has had this happen

You mean it rained up there in Little Rock today? My guess would be the rain gutter seam sealer is cracked. Getting in between the outer skin and the inner head liner above the windsheild and running down the A pillers and then hitting the lip on the bottom of the dash and running from there dripping everytime you turn. Will also fill up your brand new glove box insert and make you poke a drain hole in it. No wait thats my truck... my bad.

every truck (and burb) I've owned leaks under the cowl vent. Some one posted a photo here recently of the dried up and cracked seam sealer that is probably the problem.

Same here inside the cowling area above the glove box the seam sealer is crap now and there is a little rust there.

Re: I'm sure someone else has had this happen

Thanks for all the ideas. On the pass side it looks like it is coming in from above the glove box and running down the back of it. I bet it is that "new" windshield leaking in and running down. I will try the other ideas when its not raining.

If anyone runs across the photo Longhorn Man is talking about let me know.

yep, my vote for dried seam sealer. found my leak by tracing the dusty water streak marks on the cowl, inside the truck.

Wait, you replaced the windshield and windshield gasket and now it's leaking. I wonder where it's coming from?

Re: I'm sure someone else has had this happen

happened to me a while back. I felt my left leg getting wet as I was driving in the rain. I checked the gutter along the top of the cab. The sealer was dry and cracked in places. I took my index finger and put a small amount of silicone along the gutter. Never had any more problems.

Re: I'm sure someone else has had this happen

It is probably all of the above. This truck was parked in a shed for 15 or so years. I have only owned for a few months and yesterday was the first drive in the rain. I have no doubt it the new windshield, possibly small amount from rain gutter and who knows where else. If it is parked I will see 2 or 3 drops on the floor, when I am driving it down the road it just about pours on the floor on both sides.

Re: I'm sure someone else has had this happen

The seam sealer in the topgutter drys and the cowl air passage has sealed seams, too. But,either one can rust out as well.Especially the cowl area, even in Arizona.Leaves clog it up and holds moisture.
