Thought I'd put my 10,000th post where my first post began

10,000 posts ago I bought my 69 K20 back in about February, I'm guessing, of 2000. It had a mighty 307 V-8 and I knew next to nothing about the 67-72 Chevy trucks, but I had a strong desire to own one after slobering over a friend's 1970 C30 converted to 4wd.

I was a little concerned about running unleaded fuel in an older vehicle so I started searching on Yahoo (I'm pretty sure it would have been Yahoo) for the answer to whether I needed to worry about the lead issue. I came across this rather small board and found I needed to register to post a question which brought me to the problem of what screen name to use. At the time I had a 1995 GMC Yukon that I totally dug and I kind of like the west and so I'm sitting there thinking what could my screen name be and I thought, Yukon Jack. Yep, that will work. So I registered and entered the 67-72chevytrucks.com cult - I must say my life changed at that point.

I put out my post asking if I needed to worry about using unleaded gas in my 307 and wasn't long before that question was answered and I had loads more questions that followed.

Slowly I started to learn more and more to the point where I could actually start answering some of other people's questions.

Along the way my 69 K20 has turned from rough farm truck that I loved to drive to what it is today - I've enjoyed it equally no matter what shape it was in. This board has always, and I mean ALWAYS been able to answer my questions and even lead me to the purchase of my 70 K5 (a boardmember happened to post a link to a for sale post on a Texas fishing board).

I've met a number of board members and Barn9 (who I met through this board) even drove with me to Dallas, Texas to pick up the 70 K5 with the threat of an ice storm awaiting our arrival back in Kansas. I can't even count the number of boardmembers who sold or gave me a part for my trucks. Heck, I even had a boardmember on the east coast give me a 4 speed tranny and adapter that I needed for my Rockwell transfer case. He went to the trouble of making a crate and took the transmission to the shipping company, all he asked was for me to cover the shipping.

To all the boardmembers, thanks for helping me with all my stupid (and not so stupid) questions.

To Josh - thanks for taking the time to start and run this board and giving all you give to us!

Here's my 69 when I first bought it

And of course my 70 K5, this was loading it up in Texas, right before the entertaining trip back to Kansas

Re: Thought I'd put my 10,000th post where my first post began

I just noticed yesterday that I'm ever-so-slowly closing in on 1000 posts. Seems like it has taken forever to reach this point, but like you, I feel like I've gained a lifetime worth of wisdom (and sarcasm) by being a part of this board.

Thanks to Josh and Liz, and all the staff for taking the time to keep this place running like it does.

Re: Thought I'd put my 10,000th post where my first post began

That is really awsome man, and I love what you have done with your truck, it is a pretty damn clean ole K-20.

Myself, I had the good fortune of having my first truck be a 1971 K-20. It was an amasing truck with a 350 that was built up a bit, a SM465, a NP-205 and an Advance Adapters overdrive. I was 15 years old when I bought the truck, and unfortunately I didnt know much about them then, all I did know was that I loved them! Sadly though the cab under my truck was rusted out, and it didnt take long before the cab was pushing back into the box every time I pushed the clutch, and the truck had to go.

I traded it in on a 1970 Chevy K/10 short bed that had brand new black paint on it, a 4 speed, a 205 and a 350. The truck was pretty clean, the motor wasnt anything too fancy. It made it about 6 months before I toasted the engine. Well the next summer I worked 5 jobs, (yep 7 days a week for 3 months) and saved up enough cash to build a new engine for the truck, I wound up with a 350 +.030 over and a full roller cam, and some Vortec heads. By the time I finished the truck, it would roast all 4 tires!

By then it was a fully fledged sickness, I wound up going through a 67 GMC step side 2wd, then a 71 Chevy C/10 long bed, a 67 chevy that I parted out to build into another 1970 K-10 that I converted to a K-30 and stuffed a 454 in. As well there was another 70 in there I bought and sold with out getting running, and a pair of 67 long beds that I combined into one whole rust free truck and sold.

Now I have my 72 Blazer, and my 72 C/30. All great trucks.

I will be looking forward to seeing how your Blazer turns out. If it is anything like your K/20 its going to be damn nice.

Wow...you are member #414, I joined less than a year later and I'm #1956!
I remember my first question on here too... it was about the spring that goes around the stock drum on a 67 - 69 model.

Hmm, my Attach of the One Ton thread rings a bell, but I don't see that quote in it.

Me and trailers, gawd, they don't mix well. Let's see:

1. Go get first 1 ton dually donor vehicle for the bbc swap into the 69 K20 - I use my round bale trailer to drag the wrecked 1 ton home, end up bending the trailer.

2. Go get 70 K5 using friends vehicle trailer - rotted tire on K5 goes flat on trailer, pushing trailer fender into trailer tire, causing blowout and shredded trailer tire on busy Texas highway. Barn9 was sweating bullets!

3. Go get 78 3/4 ton donor vehicle for axle swap into 70 K5 - borrow friend's trailer again. Trailer's fender flexes and starts to rub badly on trailer tire - causing a little damage and $100 to have machine shop fix trailer enough that I can get from Topeka to Wichita.

4. Get home, start unloading parts truck and chain slips off of come along - parts truck rolls off trailer . . . course it has to roll off and hit stuff in the back of my barn.

5. Then the infamous Attack of the 1 ton and my resultant injured arm.

Me no likey trailers!!!!!!

Re: Thought I'd put my 10,000th post where my first post began

Cool story.I remember your name from when I first came here.One,the name sticks.Two,you have a K/20...my weakness.And three,you were on CK5 also.
I found this place through a link from Vintage Chevy Trucks.I first started my internet experience in`01.In a 4wd mag was an article on the 6.5TD "More Power" project by www.thedieselpage.com,so I typed my first web address...and it worked!!!
I learned alot about the GM diesels and thought I was yacking it up with 500 posts by`04.I only got on the`puter in the winter or if I needed some info. That site was mostly older 5th wheel travel trailer haulers and was not nearly social as this site.
Then,in Hemmings Motor news I discovered some sellers had websites and I checked out www.thefillingstation.com and there was a link to www.vintagechevytrucks.com which had a link to www.67-72chevytrucks.com and the rest is history. At first I just kept checking it out from time to time.In fall of`04 I logged on an started posting. Now I can`t stop!!!

I have always enjoyed and gained from your very informative tech articles, and its been great watching that Beast of a truck of yours grow over the years.

Congrats Yukon!!!!
I joined 2 months after you in 2000 and I have a measly 80 something posts.
I bought my first 71 chevrolet in 1989, but I learned to drive in a 1969 GMC when I was seven, so I have always had a soft spot for 67-72 trucks.
Keep up the great contributions.

Yukon, I had forgotten how much you and tailors got along. Both your trucks came out great and love reading your posts on them. So what's the next 67-72 project? You got the fever and a daughter or two close to driving if I remember right

Re: Thought I'd put my 10,000th post where my first post began

No plans to add to the stable but do of course have some projects that I need to get around to.

This winter (I better get on this quick) the 69 is getting a Dana 60 front axle from the donor 1 ton that attacked me. Also going to try to get some of the body lift off - want to get it down to 1-2".

No big plans for the K5 at the moment. I just want to drive and enjoy it still. I do want to get the surface rust/exposed areas protected but painting the whole K5 just doesn't interest me. I can't get within 10' of the K20 without chipping the paint. With the K5, I don't have any worries and that is kinda nice!

My oldest daughter is 13 and I've dropped the hint that I would enjoy getting her one of these trucks, but alas, she has her heart set on a new style VW bug. Well, at least they are dropping in used prices, that's about the only good thing I can come up with on that issue.

Definitely cool reading about other's stories of how they ended up here. Thanks!
