68 ebrake removal
How do you remove the ebrake setup on a 68? I want to take it to the powser coaters.

I've had to remove mine when I removed the steering column. If I remember correctly, there are 3 bolts on the bracket that holds it. I've never removed it completely off, just out of the way to get the column off.
The book says to: 1. Remove the bolts which attach the lever to the engine compartment. 2. To remove the rear cables, release the hand control lever and then remove the equalizer locknut and the front cable connecting clevis so that all the tension is removed from the rear cables. 3. Disconnect the rear cable clevis from the equalizer. 4. Extract the U-shaped retainer from the rear cable bracket on the frame. Pull the cable from the bracket. Hope that makes some sense to you. Almost have to just dive in. |

This is a little late, but I'm going to answer just because I had to do it last night The instructions above work as well, but there are a couple things I'd like to add.
I'm looking for a way to keep my handle brake (don't like the pedal brake) but not use the stupid X-cable system on the frame, and found this thread while searching. Anyway, this is the process: * Detach the e-brake cable from the e-brake handle and route it out to the engine compartment. * Trace that line down, through the frame, over to where it meets the other line (near the tranny). You should see a doulbe-nutted line where it meets a banana-shaped clip. Undo these two nuts, and pull the line going back to the cab/firewall free. * Look at where that line routes through to the frame - you should be able to figure out how to squeeze it on the inside of the frame rail...do this, and remove that section of line. * Go back to your trailing arms, find the mounting point for the e-brake cable. You'll find that on each trailing arm, the cable has a lead end which is inserted into a flat C-shaped (or U-shaped) piece of metal. Again, you should be able to figure out how to slide each one out, it's not too tricky * Slide one of the cables up towards the bar that ties into the frame just under the passenger section of the cab and slide it through the metal clip. * Remove the 0-gauge curly-Q cable retainer on the frame just under the area near the front passenger side corner of the bed. All cables should come free at this point. You will still have the line from the trailing arm over to the drums in the rear intact, making hooking it all back up a snap.
