Late model (88-98) center caps

I have some 80's style 15x8 truck rallys for my 72. I was thinking of using the later model center caps instead of the original styled metal ones. I have seen quite a few pictures on this site of the later caps on the older wheels (5 and 6 lug) but I cant figure out how they are held on. All the pictures seem to show standard chrome lug nuts and not the threaded lugs with the plastic covers.

Re: Late model (88-98) center caps

You need special lugnuts that are threaded on the outside, to accept the plastic decorative lugnut covers; these covers have a flange around the outside of them, that holds the center cap on.

Or, just take out the small plugs in the back of the cap & screw them on from the back of the wheel...

That's what I've done. 1/4"-20 screws work perfect. Then use chrome lugnuts.

That is perfect. I didn't have a late model cap around to look at. That is cool how those holes line up.

Thanks Again!

That's the same thing I've done with the 1/4-20 bolts, just be carefull tapping the holes and don't overtighten the bolts.

What size tires/wheels? Looks like my beaters current set-up; 15x6.5" van ralleys w/215-70's & 15x8" truck ralleys w/255-70's.

I actually used the 1/2" conversion lugs on mine since I had to get lug nuts anyway. I'm using the black plastic caps & like the look of the black lug-nut covers.

You can buy 1/2" lug nuts with the threads on the outside from some of the aftermarket wheel dealers for $20-$25. They usually come with the plastic lugs to hold the centers on.

Those are the 'conversion' lug-nuts I used.

Same wheels as you but I'm running 245/60's and 275/60's.

The only thing about using the chrome lugs is I need to use a thin wall socket to get to them.

From your nearest GM dealer, a salvage yard or the old EBay under truck wheels and accessories.
